PROCLAMATION
ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH ~ APRIL 2026
PRESENTED TO ALIYA GONSALVES
MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING
WHEREAS, alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States; and
WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 178,000 deaths occur
from excessive alcohol use in the United States each year; and
WHEREAS, alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects about 28 million people in the United States; and
WHEREAS, excessive alcohol use is the fourth leading cause of preventable death in the United States,
according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA); and
WHEREAS, alcohol remains the number one drug of choice for America’s youth, and is more likely to kill
young people than all illegal drugs combined; and
WHEREAS, young people who start drinking before the age of 15 are more likely to experience an alcohol
use disorder than those who begin drinking after the age of 21; and
WHEREAS, alcohol is a significant factor in the deaths of people younger than 21 in the United States
each year, which includes deaths from motor vehicle crashes, homicides, alcohol overdoses, falls, burns,
drowning and suicides; and
WHEREAS, kids who have conversations with their parents and learn about the dangers of alcohol and
drug use are less likely to use alcohol and drugs than those who don’t have such conversations; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council does hereby proclaim April 2026 as Alcohol Awareness
Month and encourages all community members to pledge to take a stand to prevent underage drinking and
alcohol abuse.
