PROCLAMATION
NATIONAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH – MARCH 2026
PRESENTED TO NORALYN GILES & LEAH SADUR
WHEREAS, on February 26, 1987, President Ronald Reagan officially declared Proclamation 5613 making
March National Disabilities Awareness Month, calling for citizens to provide understanding,
encouragement, and opportunities to help persons with disabilities lead productive and fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS, people with disabilities are an important, vital part of our community as valued workers, civic
leaders, business owners, veterans, family members and friends, and they are innovative and valued
contributors in the workplace, the classroom, and the community; and
WHEREAS, 2026 marks the 36th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990 (ADA) whose goals include equality of opportunity, full participation, economic self-sufficiency, and
independent living; and
WHEREAS, the ADA has played a historic role in enabling people with disabilities to fully participate in
all aspects of society by removing barriers to employment, public services, public accommodations,
transportation, and providing access to telecommunications, websites, online systems, mobile apps, and
other forms of information and communication technology; and
WHEREAS, recognition of the contributions of people with disabilities is an effective way to overcome
negative stereotypes and eliminate physical and attitudinal barriers to full participation in all aspects of
community life including education, recreation and employment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council does hereby proclaim the month of March 2026 as National
Disabilities Awareness Month in the Town of Danville and encourages all citizens to recognize the
accomplishments and contributions of persons with disabilities throughout our community.
