Below is a letter I would like to submit for the upcoming study session.
Dear Honorable Council Members,
I am in receipt of an email sent to the community by Mayor Newell Arnerich and I am deeply concerned
as to the messaging.. This email sent on February 12, proudly announces Danville as the safest city in
California and then proceeds to present that the city council is being asked to consider
Marijaun/Cannabis retail in the town. It is not a far reach to understand these two topics are being
presented together for the community to make an unfavorable connection of safety to cannabis sales.
It is a very broad brush and very slanted way to present what I see as a personal opinion from a
public platform. What I understand is this is about the continuation of a business that has been open for
almost 5 years, without incident, but having to close as the California cannabis laws have changed. I am
in favor of the change in the laws as it protects minors from purchasing these products in any and all
venues, as these products should not be sold in gas stations and convenience stores. However this
changed law should not be at the expense of those businesses that have expertise in holistic cannabis
products legal to purchase in all of California through a dispensary license.
Most importantly, this type of outreach to the community feels like an effort to fan a fire rather than use
this upcoming meeting to gather information to make informed decisions. It serves as an injustice to the
process. Truly disappointing that the community has lost the opportunity to look at this without stirring
public outcry from those who may not have all the information at hand.
