Mayor Arnerich,
I’ve hesitated to reach out regarding cannabis retail sales being considered in Danville because I know Jeff
Sutherland’s shop has been affected by recent changes in the law. As a downtown shop owner myself (Favorite Story
on Prospect Ave), I feel for Jeff but would ask that my concerns here remain anonymous to avoid tensions.
I’m not in favor of allowing retail sales of cannabis in Danville. I see kids downtown every day and it warms my heart
that our town is a safe, healthy environment for our kids. My son attends San Ramon Valley High and I know kids in
our community like to hang out downtown. I know of many kids who like to come into my shop after school. I just don’t
see how allowing cannabis sales would benefit them, our downtown, our businesses or our community. It
wouldn’t improve the safety, health or wellbeing of our community. Particularly when considering the kids in our
community.
I know attitudes towards marijuana have relaxed in recent years but I’d like to share a recent article from The New
York Times that outlines why we’ve “gone too far in accepting and even promoting (the use of
marijuana)”: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/09/opinion/regulate-legalized-marijuana.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share
I’d also like to point out that nearby areas that do allow retail cannabis sales aren’t exactly something to aspire to.
Thank you for asking for and considering community perspectives.
Kindly,
Dana Garson
