Part of the update to the Plan, as adopted on July 5, 2017, was to provide innovative arts and cultural performances to inspire Danville’s arts system. The Village Theatre (Theatre) has a rich history that spans over a century. Built in 1913, the Theatre has served various purposes over the years. In 1987, it was transformed into a performing arts theatre and art gallery, and has become a popular venue for community events, dance performances, children’s theatre workshops, and more, and continues to be a cultural hub for the Town of Danville to this day. DISCUSSION The Cultural Arts program is tasked with revitalizing the performing arts and bringing new opportunities to revitalize performing arts and bring new opportunities to Danville. We have a thriving community, rich in art and culture, however, the Theatre currently does not have a resident theatre company producing high-quality shows for the community. The Theatre has the potential to become a vibrant performing arts center with regional appeal. One way to do this is to bring in a theatre company that can provide incredible plays, musicals, and comedy, enhancing patronage in our downtown businesses and restaurants. Katie Rubin and Sixth Line Studios have been producing high-quality plays and other theatre productions, as well as providing acting classes and workshops in the Sacramento/ Bay Area for over 25 years. “The 39 Steps” is a fast-paced, hilarious spy spoof based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film, in which four actors play over a hundred characters as an ordinary man becomes entangled in a globe-trotting adventure to clear FINANCE COMMITTEE MEMORANDUM 3.1 his name and stop a mysterious spy ring. “The 39 Steps” has multi-interest, multi- generational appeal, and is suitable for all ages. Sufficient funds have been appropriated in the Town's 2025-26 Operating Budget to cover the production costs of this play. 100% of tickets sales up to the initial expended amount will be directed back to the Town of Danville. It is recommended that the Finance Committee approve a contract not to exceed $37,000 to Sixth Line Studios for theatre production of the “The 39 Steps” in coordination with the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department, Cultural Arts Division.
