STAFF REPORT

TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission August 13, 2025
SUBJECT: Discuss the Danville South Park Playground Replacement Project and
Provide Staff with Feedback and Direction
BACKGROUND
The Town owns and maintains six playgrounds in its parks. As these playgrounds age,
the equipment requires replacement approximately every 15 to 20 years, essentially
establishing a rotational replacement program. The playground at Danville South Park
was last renovated in 2001; while repairs over the years have extended the life of the
playground, it is now appropriate to consider its replacement.
DISCUSSION
The playground at Danville South Park is relatively small in size at approximately 3,400
square feet and currently includes slides, overhead rings, swings and spring toys. The
surface currently consists primarily of engineered wood fiber (EWF), along with areas of
poured in place (PIP) and sand.
To help initiate the process of identifying replacement playground equipment, sample
layouts are attached to give the Commission an idea of what types of features could fit
within the space. Some options include traditional and accessible swings, as well as
climbing, spinning, sliding and sensory features that appeal to a variety of ages and
abilities. The colors shown in the sample layouts are also for visual purposes; feedback
from the Commission on color preferences can be incorporated into draft designs.
As shown in the sample layouts, based on the smaller playground footprint the most
likely options include utilizing a larger primary play structure along with a secondary
feature like swings, or a smaller primary structure along with several secondary features.
Based on feedback from the Commission on primary structure size, secondary feature
options, colors/themes and any other aspects of the playground, draft designs can be
created for more detailed review.
FISCAL IMPACT
Project cost will be determined upon completion of a final design. Preliminary estimates
for the playground equipment replacement are in the range of $250,000. Sufficient funds
have been appropriated in the Capital Improvement Program for the cost of the
playground equipment. Other potential improvements, such as surface replacement or
shade structures, would require an additional funding appropriation.
RECOMMENDATION
Discuss the Danville South Park Playground Replacement Project and Provide Staff with
Feedback and Direction.
