Dear Mayor Renee Morgan, Vice Mayor Newell Arnerich and Councilmembers Karen Stepper, Robert Storer and Mark Belotz, Thank you for engaging in a study session regarding e-bikes. Please take meaningful action as the use of throttle/pedal assist- operated Class 2 e-bikes is here to stay. And the presence of these e- bikes, especially when operated by people under 16, are a real threat to public safety and to residents' enjoyment of Iron Horse Trail and residential streets. I'm an avid walker and biker. In Magee Ranch, on Sunhaven Road and on the trail that connects our road to the subdivision on Laurel Drive, youth driving Class 2 e-bikes at high speeds is an issue. They drive in the center of the road, oblivious to cars and kids. When I've asked them to slow down, they dismiss me. Last week when biking, I stopped at intersection on Danville Blvd and Stone Valley, adjacent to the Alamo Safeway Plaza. A group of young males, all on Class 2 e-bikes, came through the intersection and did wheelies in the center----clearly unaware of the cars also coming into that intersection. I held my breath, thinking an avoidable accident was about to happen. 1 Walking or biking on Iron Horse Trail is considerably less enjoyable now that speeding e-bikes are regularly a part of the community. I look forward to a time when our youth are healthy and strong enough to pedal regular bicycles. Until that time, adults in the community need to act and protect everyone. Please, discourage the purchase and use of throttle-operated Class 2 e-bikes (e-motos) by children under the age of 16. Mandate that safety classes are required for all who own and operate any motorized vehicle on our trails and streets. Let's not wait for more accidents or harm to be done. Cordially, Kim Risedorph 925/699-8877 2
