Dear Mayor Renee Morgan, Vice Mayor Newell Arnerich, and Councilmembers Karen Stepper, Robert Storer, and Mark Belotz, I am writing to urge the Danville Town Council to take meaningful action to address the growing public safety concern posed by the use of throttle/pedal-assist-operated Class 2 e-bikes commonly known as electric motorcycles or “e-motos”. Why? Because people are getting hurt. Both the riders and pedestrians, of all ages. And if that doesn't convince you, maybe the impact on Danville merchants will: I and others in my immediate social group are not going downtown or to the Iron Horse trail to walk around (and spend money) anymore because we are afraid of being hit by an e-moto. As one of my dear and older friends said, "You can't hear them coming." I personally am also afraid of being involved in an accident with a young e-bike rider while driving my vehicle. Accidents involving children always skew to blaming the driver - even when it may well have been the child's fault. I've been through this once and I'm not interested in a repeat performance. The Town of Danville is going to run into even more serious consequences sooner or later. The ostrich approach (head in sand, no action) doesn't afford you any real protection: a jury will want to know what steps you took to prevent grievous outcomes. You could prevent more injuries, save lives, and protect local businesses by taking bold action. Please do so. Sincerely, Nicola Place 1
