The wood structure was deteriorating and threatening to fall, therefore it was removed. This structure was held up by four concrete pillars with picnic tables and benches underneath and surrounded by trees. With the removal of the wooden portion, what remains is the four concrete pillars, along with the metal brackets used to support the wooden cover. Example Structure Remaining Pillars DISCUSSION The 2017 Parks, Recreation, and Arts Strategic Plan (the Plan) provides a long-term vision for maintaining and enhancing the community's parks, recreation, and arts amenities. Among its key strategic recommendations are sustaining and reinvesting in existing infrastructure and expanding high-impact public art programming. These priorities present an opportunity to assess the future of the shade structure at Sycamore Valley Park. The remaining pillars currently stand without the original overhead covering. Given the Plan’s emphasis on reinvestment and public art, the Commission is asked to discuss potential paths forward for this space. Those options could include: • Removal of the Pillars • Replacement of the Shade Structure • Development of an Art Piece Using the Existing Pillars The Commission’s input will help staff determine the most appropriate next steps. RECOMMENDATION Receive the report and provide staff with direction regarding the Sycamore Valley Park shade structure. Prepared by: Henry Perezalonso Recreation, Arts & Community Services Director
