Originally School Street ran east to Halverson Creek and was the back door to the Danville
Grammar School. On the south side from 1893 until the 1920’s John Halverson ran his
Livery Stable renting buggies, horses, and wagons to local ranchers and travelers arriving by
train at the depot a block west. It was the rental car agency of its day. From 1900 to 1906
the Danville Creamery processed cream at the NE corner of Hartz and School Street which
was sold in Hayward for butter and cheese. The sales tided ranch families over until their
crops went to market. Until 1942 the Fukuchi family operated a Japanese store and a
school in their house next door, but it closed in WWII when they were forced into an Arizona
concentration camp. Later this site housed several restaurants including Dan McGrew’s ,
Tiger Alley, and Faz.
