PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS COMMISSION
STAFF REPORT
5.2
TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission February 12, 2025
SUBJECT: Montair Elementary School Playground Discussion
BACKGROUND:
At its December 11, 2024, the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission (Commission)
requested from staff information regarding the Montair Elementary Playground,
including background of the agreement with the Town of Danville (Town) and San
Ramon Valley Unified School District (District) to understand possible replacement
options.
In 1995, the Town and District executed a Development and Use Agreement (Agreement)
for School Parks. In general, the Agreement identifies portions of various school
properties that the Town would maintain, and in turn the Town was provided use of the
facilities for organized sports rentals and the general benefit of the community. Among
the properties included is Montair Elementary School, where the Town maintains the
sports field and the playground adjacent to Esther Lane.
DISCUSSION
With the playground being over 30 years old, there have been recent discussions amongst
members of the Commission regarding the potential replacement of the equipment in the
future. While the Agreement identifies the Town as the party responsible for maintaining
the existing playground, it does not account for the eventual replacement of the facility.
However, Town and District staff have maintained an open line of communication
regarding the future need to replace the playground and, as with a wide range of facilities
and programs, are committed to working collaboratively on this project when the time
comes.
The Montair Elementary playground replacement is not a currently identified project
within the Town’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As with any project, careful
consideration would need to be given to funding and prioritization, should the
Commission wish to recommend this project for the CIP. While the playground is
upwards of 30 years old and shows cosmetic signs of this with things like paint and safety
surface patches, there are not currently any known major equipment issues or safety
concerns. As with all Town-maintained playgrounds, regular routine safety inspections
are performed and minor corrections are made, as needed.
RECOMMENDATION
Receive the report and provide staff with direction regarding the Montair Elementary
School Playground.
