Dear Sir/Madam:
I am unable to attend tonight’s Town Council Meeting. However, I would like to comment on the
Town Council’s intention to remove Al Kalin and Bruce Bilodeau from the Bicycle Advocacy
Commission.
First and foremost, any commissioner serving on behalf of the public should be listened to with
respect and decency. It is clear that two of the Town Council members have threatened and
intimidated these two commissioners without cause. If anyone is to be removed from “office”, it
should be these two Town Council members because they have shown a lack of professionalism and
regard to volunteers who have the public’s interests in mind.
Secondly, Al Kalin and Bruce Bilodeau have dedicated many years of their lives to keeping cyclists
(and motorists, by the way) safe from harm. Their efforts are very clear and present and should be
commended by all Town Council members and the public. Keeping Col. Kalin and Mr. Bilodeau on
the commission is essential. They represent cyclists, and the public, in a professional manner and
provide the Town Council with necessary feedback on the transportation problems that exist within
our community. They must be kept on the commission.
Third, if you are considering eliminating the Bicycle Advocacy Commission, this action could be
considered neglect, and if collisions with bicyclists and motorists result, the public might think the
Town of Danville just doesn’t give a damn about cyclists. The next cyclist death could mean legal
action against the community.
Lastly, I am a senior road cyclist and former Team in Training Coach and know intimately the rules
of the road, and have taught multiple teams how to ride safely, as a group and solo, on our roads.
Not all cyclists have gone through such training. However, having the knowledge I do and the
experience of 20 years of cycling, I know how important it is to have Town Council members listen to
the experts on the sport.
Please keep the Bicycle Advocacy Commission in place, and remand the two Council members for
their behavior. Al Karin and his colleague must stay on the commission.
Thank you for listening.
