SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION 5.5
STAFF REPORT
TO: Senior Advisory Commission July 24, 2024
SUBJECT: Age-Friendly Roadmap Implementation Potential Projects Discussion
BACKGROUND
The Town’s Senior Advisory Commission (Commission) was established in July 2019. It
is charged with advising the Town Council on how to support the Town’s older adult
residents as they age in place and assessing how to best make Danville an age-friendly
city. As a result, the Commission worked with consultants on the development of an
“Age-Friendly Roadmap” for Danville.
At its February 15, 2022, meeting, the Town Council approved the Commission's
recommendation to adopt the Danville Age-Friendly Roadmap (Roadmap) and
previously allocated $500,000 to support its implementation.
At its April 24, 2024, meeting, the Commission, at its request, discussed a comprehensive
listing of items that could be considered to enhance Danville's age-friendliness through
the allocated funding. The staff was to bring back specific projects to the Commission for
further discussion.
DISCUSSION
Two specific items that were introduced to the Commission at its April 24, 2024, meeting,
which could have an immediate impact, were the potential to utilize allocated funding to
help enhance current projects such as the Diablo Vista Park playground renovation,
which could include a fitness area and wayfinding signage to the Senior Center in the
downtown area.
The fitness equipment for the Diablo Vista Park playground renovation was included in
the design; however, based on the project budget, it was designated as an “ad alternate”
piece of equipment, meaning that it would only be installed if additional funding became
available. As the inclusion of fitness equipment within the Town was a goal of the
Commission through the Roadmap, this opportunity has the potential to come to fruition
in a timely fashion as it would be a part of an existing project.
Directional signage to the Senior Center within the downtown area was also identified as
a goal to ensure that participants can more readily find and access the Senior Center,
which is a hub for resources for aging adults. After reviewing locations where a
directional sign for the Senior Center could be installed, the wayfinding signage at
Prospect and Front Street was determined to be the most appropriate.
The following would be the estimated costs for each project:
Adult Fitness Equipment – Diablo Vista Park $ 78,000
Wayfinding Signage to the Senior Center at Prospect & Front $ 1,000
FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funding would be available for the Age-Friendly Roadmap implementation
project through the previously allocated funding to cover the estimated amount needed
to include the fitness equipment in the Diablo Vista Park renovation project and add
additional wayfinding signage.
RECOMMENDATION
Discuss and approve possible Age-Friendly Implementation projects for implementation.
