Re: Agenda item 8.1 of the Town Council Meeting, Tuesday July 2. Ordinance No.
2024-07 prohibiting riding electric bicycles and motorized scooters on sidewalks
in business districts within the Town of Danville
The Town Council should not exclude regular bicycles from the ordinance being
considered.
While on the BAC, I supported and drafted the unanimously approved wording for the
ordinance to specifically prohibit all bike riding in the busy downtown district. It makes
sense. Explicitly excluding regular
bikes is the same as an implicit
approval of riding bikes in the
congested downtown retail area
where many residents, merchants,
and property owners have
complained.

These images are not real, but highlight the point that regardless of how a bike is equipped,
bad riding behavior is bad riding behavior. And certain places are appropriate for riding,
while others are not. Busy downtown pedestrian areas should allow all bikes or no bikes. I
support no bikes of any type. (I have both types).
I recommend the Council remove the exclusion of regular bikes in this ordinance and
return to the wording as unanimously recommended by the Bicycle Advisory Commission.
