HomeMy WebLinkAbout021324-03.1Town of Danville 2024 Design Awards Recognizing Outstanding Architectural Design Town Council Karen Stepper, Mayor Dave Fong, Vice Mayor Newell Arnerich Renee Morgan Robert Storer rA&S, MEMORANDUM DATE: February 13, 2024 TO: Town Council FROM: Riley Anderson -Barrett, Associate Planner SUBJECT: 2024 Design Awards Nominees The Town of Danville presents the Town's 11th Design Awards to recognize outstanding architectural design and to promote excellence in project design. This award program strives to raise public awareness of the value and design excellence that owners, architects, and builders bring to all project types. The quality of these projects exemplifies and upholds the Town's dedication to preserving and enhancing the Town's special history and character. The design awards are presented periodically, as warranted, and were last presented during a regularly scheduled Town Council Meeting in March of 2020. This year the categories are: Category 1: Outstanding New Residential Neighborhood Design Category 2: Outstanding Custom Home Design Category 3: Outstanding Commercial Remodel Design Category 4: Outstanding Historic Renovation and Redevelopment Design Nominations include new developments and building renovations constructed between 2019 and 2023. On January 11, 2024, the Design Review Board evaluated the nominees and made recommendations as to which projects should be considered for the 2024 Design Awards. Projects recommended by the Design Review Board are denoted with an asterisk. Please review the nominees and score them in the included scorecard based on the listed criteria. We also recommend reaching out to the architects to research additional information on the project. We will collectively review the evaluations at the February 13, 2024, Town Council study session. Award winning projects will be recognized by the Town Council at a regularly scheduled meeting on March 19, 2024. Judging Criteria and Scoring Details Each entry will be judged for the success with which the project meets the intent and requirements of the Town's General Plan, Climate Action Plan, Ordinances, and Adopted Design Standards. Each nominee will be evaluated and scored on the following criteria (scale of 0-10, where 10 is the best): 1) Project Configuration and Layout 2) Fitting into the Fabric of the Community 3) Colors, Materials and Lighting 4) Degree of Innovation - Exterior Design Elements 5) Landscaping and Entries 6) Exterior Finishes 7) Renewable Sources of Energy or Energy Efficient or Green Building Techniques Total Points: (0-10 points) (0-10 points) (0-10 points) (0-10 points) (0-10 points) (0-10 points) (0-10 points) 0 to 70 Points 2024 Design Awards Nominees * Design Review Board Recommendations Category 1: Outstanding New Residential Neighborhood Design 1. Rivers Lane - (80-88 Rivers Lane) * • Scope of Work: Five new single-family residences • Owner: 1485 Lawrence LLC • Architect/ Designer: The Address Company 2. El Dorado Ave - (134 El Dorado Ave) * • Scope of Work: Five new single-family residences • Owner: Haven Development • Architect/ Designer: William Hezmalhalch Architects 3. Edendale - (southeast corner of Camino Tassajara and Sherburne Hills Road, Akabane Lane, Maple Lane, and Pine Place) • Scope of Work: 18 new single-family residences • Owner: Trumark Homes, LLC • Architect/ Designer: SDG Architects 4. Hackler Court - (80-89 Hackler Court) • Scope of Work: Six new single-family residences as part of a previously approved Major Subdivision • Owner: Kathy Blankenship • Architect/ Designer: The Address Company 5. Julia Loo - (100-130 Julia Loop) • Scope of Work: 19 new single-family residences with two of the lots being below market rate duet units • Owner: Landsea Homes • Architect/ Designer: William Hezmalhalch Architects The Design Review Board recommended two projects for the award, 134 El Dorado as a good example of a new neighborhood and Rivers Lane as a good example of infill. Category 2: Outstanding Custom Home Design 1. Mann Residence - (66 Sherburne Hills Road) • Scope of Work: One new 4,913 square foot home, with an attached 1,174 square foot four -car garage • Owner: Sandy Mann • Architect/ Designer: Watkins Planning & Landscape Architecture 2. Haramoglis Residence - (372 Cordell Drive) * • Scope of Work: One new 3,536 square foot single family residence with an attached 760 square foot garage • Owners: Dimitrios and Nikki Haramoglis • Architect/ Designer: William Wood Architects The Design Review Board recommended 372 Cordell Drive for the award. Category 3: Outstanding Commercial Remodel Design 1. Taco Bell - (444 Front Street) • Scope of Work: Renovation of a restaurant use that includes a complete exterior remodel and updated landscaping • Owner: Scarbrough Management Co. • Architect/ Designer: Globeatelie 2. I Can Do That! Performing Arts Center - (194 Diablo Road) * • Scope of Work: Renovation of the fagade of an existing commercial building • Owner: Marcus Madrid • Architect/ Designer: Barry and Wynn Architects 3. 200 Hartz Ave Shopping Center - (200 Hartz Ave) * • Scope of Work: Renovation of the existing 14,182 square foot commercial building shopping center • Owner: Silvio Quattro • Architect/ Designer: FCGA Architects 4. The Fazzio/Fischer House - (344 Railroad Ave) • Scope of Work: Renovation of an existing 988 square foot historic building and construction of a new 2,604 square foot two-story building at the rear of the site • Owners: Todd and Kristin Fitch • Architect/ Designer: Barry and Wynn Architects The Design Review Board recommended two projects for the award, 200 Hartz Ave as a good example of a new commercial building and I Can Do That! Performing Arts Center as a good example of renovation and reuse. Category 4: Outstanding Historic Renovation and Redevelopment Design 1. Jewelers Building - (375 Hartz Ave) * • Scope of Work: Exterior facade improvements to the buildings historic facade facing Hartz Avenue, non -historic second story addition to the rear, deck at the rear of the building, ground floor addition, and new trash enclosure to existing historic building • Owners: John and Sharon DeSousa, • Architect/ Designer: Barry and Wynn Architects The Design Review Board recommended the Jewelers Building for the award.
