PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS COMMISSION
STAFF REPORT
5.1
TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission January 10, 2024
SUBJECT: Consider approval of the Tassajara Valley Little League Scoreboard
Proposal at Sycamore Valley Park
BACKGROUND:
Tassajara Valley Little League (TVLL), a longtime member of the Sports Alliance, is the
primary user of baseball fields #1 and #5 (the upper-level grass fields) at Sycamore Valley
Park during their season, which generally runs from March through July of each year.
The Town enjoys a successful partnership with TVLL at Sycamore Valley Park, including
their maintenance of the grass and dirt infields at fields #1 and #5, the scorekeeper booths
at fields #1, #2, #3, #5 and #6, their annual use and upkeep of the snack shack during
their season, and coordination for tournaments and events.
DISCUSSION
As part of their commitment to provide high-quality fields and recreational experiences
for their members, TVLL has approached Town staff about the potential to install a
scoreboard at Sycamore Valley Park field #5. The scoreboard would be located generally
in the left field corner and outside of the field of play for both baseball and any other user
groups, as the grass slopes significantly in this area and is not a playable surface. The
scoreboard would be approximately ten feet wide and seven feet tall, mounted on two
approximately ten-foot-high posts – for a total height of 17 feet from the ground to the
top of the scoreboard (refer to Attachments for renderings and dimensions of the
scoreboard). The scoreboard would be controlled wirelessly from the scorekeeper booth
at field #5, reducing the amount of infrastructure that would need to be installed and
disturbance of the park. TVLL would be responsible for all costs associated with the
installation and maintenance of the scoreboard and would be required to return the site
to its previous condition if they were ever to remove it. Finally, TVLL has expressed a
willingness to allow other sports user groups to utilize the scoreboard during their
respective seasons.
If approved by the Commission, Town staff will work with representatives from TVLL
on plans and specifications for the scoreboard to ensure it complies with all requirements
prior to moving forward with construction.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the Tassajara Valley Little League Scoreboard Proposal at Sycamore Valley
Park.
