TO: Senior Advisory Commission
FROM: Leah Martinez
SUBJECT: Review and Approve Age-Friendly Roadmap
BACKGROUND
On February 5, 2019, the Town Council established the Senior Advisory Commission
with the goal of supporting older adult residents and their process of aging in place
through the assessment of the Town’s amenities, programs and services in providing an
age-friendly city. The Senior Advisory Commission would create an annual work plan to
address the charges of the Commission and help inform the focus and scope of their goals.
At the October 28, 2020 meeting, the Senior Advisory Commission discussed the
creation of an Age-Friendly Roadmap; a strategic plan document with a set of action
steps to achieve the Commission’s goal of creating an age-friendly Danville. Informed
by community feedback and input, the Roadmap would help guide the Commission’s
annual work plan moving forward. As a result, the Town hired consultants, Moore,
Iacofano, Goltsman, Inc. (MIG), to work with the Town in creating the Age-Friendly
Roadmap.
At the January 27, 2021 meeting, the Commission discussed the strategy for community
outreach and engagement for the development the Roadmap. Outreach methods
included an online Open Town Hall Survey, six in-person intercept events at local
coffee shops and grocery stores in May and June 2021, and community questionnaires
distributed by the Commissioners.
At the December 13, 2021 meeting, the Senior Advisory Commission reviewed the main
elements of the Age-Friendly Roadmap with MIG and staff. The Commissioners
provided feedback for the document, which was captured in the final draft document
through an executive summary, its chapters and appendix.

DISCUSSION
The Age-Friendly Roadmap was developed through a dynamic and community driven
process and reflects the needs, interests and priorities of a diverse cross-section of
Danville Community Members. Over 300 community members participated by
providing input through a broad range of outreach activities including intercept events,
online questionnaire, paper surveys and Commission meetings.
As an initial assessment of Town and community amenities, the Senior Advisory
Commissioners provided input for the Age-Friendly Baseline Matrix by identifying
local service areas and providers that serve adults and older adults. This Matrix is
included as part of the Age-Friendly Roadmap.
The Age-Friendly Roadmap is a strategic guide that grew from the 2017 Town of
Danville’s Parks, Recreation & Arts Strategic Plan Update. The Roadmap includes five
specific Strategic Directions which are to assist the Town in outlining recommendations
to align with those changing community preferences and evolving best practices. These
Strategic Directions are:
• Transportation
• Housing
• Social Connections & Community Support
• Outdoor & Indoor Facilities
• Activities & Programs
This document is intended for use by Town staff, Senior Advisory Commission
members, collaborating agencies and organizations, and other decision-makers in
shaping a system that maintains the high quality of life enjoyed by Danville residents
and visitors of all ages. It is also intended to be considered a living document which
would be reviewed by the Commissions annually to ensure it continually reflects the
current state of the Town and its residents.
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost of programs or projects associated with recommendations have yet to be
determined and would follow policies and procedures outlined for the Operating
Budget and CIP process.
RECOMMENDATION
Review and approve the 2022 Age-Friendly Roadmap and forward a recommendation
for adoption to the Town Council.
