HomeMy WebLinkAboutDanville Age-Friendly Roadmap_Preliminary Strategies_8-12-21 Town of Danville: Age-Friendly Roadmap Preliminary Strategies Domains of Livability Transportation Provide accessible, safe, convenient and affordable travel options – including public transit, rideshare, walking, and biking – to get people of all ages where they need to go. Social Connections and Community Support Create opportunities for intergenerational and multicultural interaction that promote health and wellness, and connects people of all ages to a diverse array of resources and services available in Danville. Outdoor and Indoor Facilities Provide people of all ages and abilities with indoor and outdoor places to gather, exercise, socialize, and access services to support active and healthy lifestyles. Activities and Programs Offer a wide variety of learning, fitness, social, multicultural and intergenerational activities for people of all ages, abilities and incomes to enjoy. Potential Strategies Transportation Provide accessible, affordable, and safe transportation services and options for all ages and abilities to get to/from downtown and other locations for services and recreation Offer ride services that do not require a phone app Create safe and well-maintained streets, sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists (well-lit, no trip hazards, traffic enforcements) Close Hartz Ave between Hartz Way and Diablo Rd to vehicular traffic to create a permanent walking street Beautify freeway interchanges into Danville Monitor parking lots for our safety Provide parking options with seniors in mind Partner with senior living communities, shuttle services, and volunteer local drivers to improve transportation access Provide readily accessible mobility personal transports (electric wheelchairs, walkers) strategically placed in Danville community Provide an environmentally sustainable transportation service to take seniors to medical appointment, Friday senior meal pickups, senior trips, remote parking, shopping, etc. Local shuttle transportation in downtown Social Connections and Community-Building Support a diverse and multi-generational community Create more opportunities for seniors, adults, and youth to interact and get to know each other Meet-up groups, music classes, volunteer opportunities, community gardens, park clean up, trips to nearby parks, mentoring, technology lessons etc. Coffees/Tea talks, more time after or before classes Create more events that build a community atmosphere Concerts in the park, multigenerational event, outdoor & indoor evening events, Easter, May 4th, and July 4th parade Establish community liaison or volunteer teams that can connect and check in on seniors who may face everyday problems (i.e., internet issues, planning medical care, etc.) Provide these options community in person or over the phone Encourage dignity, kindness, and respect for people of all ages and abilities Better training for our police in defusing tense situations Represent the values and beliefs of Danville Have a small government dedicated to preserving personal and property rights Improve communication and outreach for available programs and services for seniors and other community members of all ages and abilities Provide consistent, clear, frequent, and accurate communication and information (connect people to the wide range of resources for older adults and seniors) Provide resources for caregivers Ensure Danville has a range of housing options, including affordable options, that enable residents to stay in the area through all phases of life Encourage affordable housing near downtown and other walkable areas Continue the pre-packaged ADU program Encourage development of affordable senior living facilities with varying degrees of assistance Consider the impact of raising property taxes and increasing utility and water costs on residents with fixed incomes, especially retired citizens, and provide programs that help people with these costs. Outdoor and Indoor Facilities Provide more flexible recreational facilities for people of all ages and abilities Year-round aquatic facilities Convert tennis courts to include pickleball Add pickleball courts Maintain full service senior centers that can serve as a centralized hub for assistance, information, recreation, resources, and services Retirement and Medicare services Parking at senior centers Add, maintain and preserve parks, gardens, green space, open space, and walkways for residents of all ages and abilities Enforce leash laws Add and maintain walking trails (e.g., benches, no uneven walkways) Update and maintain park facilities Provide spaces for youth to take part in various programming (academics, fine arts, preforming arts, sports, and volunteerism) Provide more venues where seniors and people of all ages can meet Activities and Programs Provide a variety of programs at different times for all ages Provide opportunities for outdoor activities (e.g., Bocce ball, Golf, and Pickleball) and exercise classes (e.g., less-intensive hiking classes, aquatics classes, and golf lessons) Ensure program leaders and instructors are a good fit Make it easier for people to sign up for programs It seems like programs are filled with the regulars and interested people cannot get a spot Create affordable interesting multigenerational and cultural programs Senior trips Organized volunteer activities Senior programs downtown Add drop-in class options for people who can only attend one or a few classes due to traveling Offer a sliding fee scale so lower income residents can afford to participate Establish a mentoring program that connect seniors/adults with students/younger using activities such as pen pals or senior "buddy" programs Provide more emergency training for seniors and adults Create an emergency response plan for seniors and adults with limited mobility, minimal local family support and chronic health issues Provide opportunities for classes and services to assist with living a full and stable lifestyle Tax and financial seminars, Acalanes Adult Education, technology and software programs, tech support programs for seniors, life coaching for seniors Offer informational workshops on Prop 19 and other new legislation relevant to seniors
