Parks and Recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future by providing access to nature, outdoor space to play and exercise, free-time fun in positive spaces, and socializing and learning in a gathering. 2 OF 4 FACILITATE COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING The Danville Youth Council engaged with aging and hung out with local seniors on Saturday, December 17, to help them with all things tech. Seniors signed up to spend their Saturday morning with DYC members to learn how to use Instagram, FaceTime their grandchildren, and how to properly use their Facebook wall to wish someone a happy birthday. When they were not getting tech help, they spent time talking to DYC members about their favorite holiday traditions over a hot cup of coffee with a side of cookie decorating. PROVIDE RECREATIONAL EXPERIENCES On December 8, the Town of Danville hosted the annual Holiday Hangout for nearly fifty teens. This community event mixed mini golf with decoding secret messages and fitness challenges with arcade prizes to generate a whirlwind of fun. There was never dull moment, as teens won ticket after ticket and cashed them in for hidden bonus prizes and refreshments. The event was divided into segments in which Town Staff created unique challenges. Each of these obstacles invited the teens to participate in a different capacity, promoting socialization and teamwork. 3 OF 4 This year Santa received over 600 letters from children telling him what they wanted for Christmas and reminding him that they were on the good list this year. Santa enlisted his favorite type of elves, local volunteers, to help him respond to all the nice children of Danville. Each child received a letter back from Santa’s desk by December 24th. The annual Elf Workshop returned for another year on December 9 and 10. Over 500 children and their families created homemade crafts, made a melted snowman out of pudding, and of course got to see their favorite person, Santa! Lakeshore Learning joined in on the fun this year with interactive games and holiday giveaways.
