Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission
Correspondence as of 11:00 a.m. on November 30, 2022
Dear Town Council & Parks and Recreation Committee,
As you convene tomorrow to make a final recommendation on the location of
pickleball courts at Osage Park, please consider:
On Nov 1: Town Hall was standing room only and every voice that was heard
was “opposed” to PB in Osage.
Nov 9: Parks and Rec Zoom meeting - 117 people listened online, the vast
majority who spoke were opposed (I counted 30 "opposed", 7 "for").
The general “pro” posture was, “players want to play.” It's great fun and good
exercise. Great!
Noticeably absent, however, was acknowledgment of and sensitivity to
the known negatives that are very well-documented by now (and were
abundantly expressed at both of the meetings above, in addition to the many
emails, etc.).
The current plan is a Win/Lose, and that’s wrong thinking, especially for a town
like Danville.
A TRULY GOOD solution seeks a Win/Win. The current plan is trying to squeeze
an elephant through a doorway...and it just doesn’t fit! Almost 1,800 petition
signatures now oppose this plan. Please, ask yourselves why? That’s a big
number!
A winning solution begins with adequate, 2-lane roads, traffic lights, ample
parking, and lots of DISTANCE from homes due to noise, and away from
pedestrians and schools for safety. The lower area of Sycamore Park above the
post office meets all of these criteria. Osage meets none of them, especially
with homes backing right up to the park and two schools with 1300 kids under
age 13 who walk and ride all around the streets near Osage.
We cannot proceed at the expense of others. We must be good neighbors first.
We cannot ignore the noise, compromised safety, traffic, lack of parking, and
lots of people flooding a family neighborhood. These “side effects”
are incompatible with the Osage neighborhood, its character and, quite frankly,
its capacity.
On the safety risk, I counted 524 mostly kids and pedestrians crossing at 4
potential collision points on my street (Orange Blossom), where the complex
would be. The desire of some to play a game is not more important than a
child’s absolute right to safety.
We don’t have the right to tell neighbors that it doesn’t matter if they now
wake up and eat dinner to the drone of “POP POP POP” all day long. That’s not
OK. They were here first.
An environmental lawyer and other developers we've consulted have clearly
indicated that this project is not CEQUA exempt. This must be addressed in
earnest.
Nowhere in the mitigations is there a redress for inadequate parking.
Are we to believe the solution for exponential decibels is to wrap each court in
noise-reducing padding? If so, what does it cost? Where’s the budget? Who
makes these pads? What do they look like? And how will the hours of play be
limited, specifically?
I believe we have well-intended, good people on both sides of this issue. Why
can’t we work together to find a truly SUITABLE solution for all? This wonderful
town deserves a WIN/WIN. That truly is my hope and I believe it's possible.
With respect and sincere appreciation for your leadership, I thank you for your
time and consideration.
Best regards,
Kolisa Larue

Dear Commissioners and members of the Town Council,
My family has resided in Danville since 1999. We enjoy Osage Station Park. When he was little,
my son adored the playground there. He learned to ride a bike at the park. And he attendedCharlotte Wood MS.
I support the sport of pickle ball but in my letter I want to focus on tennis. Regardless of the
outcome of the decision on pickle ball courts at Osage, I feel strongly that 4 tennis courts are neededat the park. The tennis courts are reserved and heavily used for league play and tennis lessons. The4th court is needed to remain open for drop in tennis.
I am a tennis player and play on those tennis courts. I am the captain of a senior women’s tennisteam that plays our home matches there. I spoke at the November 9 meeting, requesting the townadd back a 4th tennis court. My local women’s tennis club, the San Ramon Valley Tennis Club(SRVTC) is located in Danville and at least 50% of the members also reside in the town. We have a
long relationship with the Town of Danville. Our club was formed in 1968. Over the years we havealso reserved courts at San Ramon HS and Monte Vista HS but are no longer able to do so since2018 (“school safety”). There are no public tennis courts in Danville our club can use other thanOsage Park. We require 3 courts per home match. Without the 4th court, there is no open court fordrop in tennis during our matches. Our reservations are specific Mondays, Tuesdays, orWednesdays starting at 9am.
We are in our 2nd season now without a 4th court. Tennis players hoping to come use the courts arefrustrated without that 4th court.
If you do decide to move forward with the plan for 6 pickle ball courts, please review and decide totake the space currently planned for a wide viewing area and move it to the parking lot side of thepickle ball courts and convert it to a 4th tennis court.
Please decide to add back the historical 4th court.
Thank you!Faye Isaacson510-872-8363

it’s crowded there already.

Please consider putting new pickleball courts somewhere other than Osage Park. Mybackyard backs up into Osage as we face CW parking lot. We hear the current pickleball courts early in the morning and we tolerate the CW traffic but additional trafficwould be a safety hazard. Thank you.

Please say NO to expanding pickle ball at Osage park.
The Osage area is high pedestrian, already congested, the noise is loud, parking is already limited! The grass on theother side of the current courts is used frequently for free play. I use it twice a week for flag football practice.
The court complex will be a draw for out of town folks to hang around our kids. Also, possible sex offenders tohover around and loiter near the middle school.

Good Morning,
I’m writing to you as a concerned mother, homeowner in Danville, mother and community Realtor. I have been to the Town Council meeting and spoke in opposition
of the courts going in at Osage. I’ve expressed my views online with the Parks and Rec department meeting.
My summary viewpoint is 1) pickleball will disturb the tranquility of the park. 2) The courts will add increased traffic and congestion to a park that is not suited for it.
3) Parking – is not sufficient and will spill over into neighborhood. 4) The “venue” will attract players from outside of Danville and negatively impact those local
residents who enjoy Osage. 5) There will be a negative impact on property values in the surrounding area for homeowners that are in close proximity. The presence of
the park would become a disclosure issue.
Last night as I walked my normal loop at the park a group of kids and dads were playing flag football in the grassy area and enjoying their time together. This picture
was taken 11/29/22 5:04 p.m. As I exited the park and counted the cars there were 42 cars – this on a chilly NOV evening – soccer game in the middle of the park,
flag football on the grassy area next to tennis courts (see pic below) and dog walkers and evening “stollers” not the height or peak season. (Like summer or fall when
soccer season is in full swing)
Please reconsider! There needs to be a better place and plan to account for all the concerns and well-being of Danville residents who enjoy the multi-use park. It’s a
hidden gem that we would like to preserve for years to come. Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Park commissioners,
I urge you to vote no on adding pickle ball courts to Osage Park! This is not a good venue for our
neighborhood for safety reasons due to traffic with 2 schools nearby. There is already so much
traffic on our narrow streets at drop off and pick up times. It would be disastrous to add more
traffic! For the safety of our neighborhood children, please
vote NO!
