Dear Gail,
My family and I moved to Danville 1975 and bought a home in Danville Station, a time when the train actually ran on the Iron Horse Trail, and cows grazed in the pear orchard behind our
fence. That pear orchard is now Osage park, and what a beautiful park it is! Thank you, Mayor, for your commitment to “small town atmosphere.”
Before Osage Park was built, a town meeting was held to inform the residents about the park and give promises that a berm would be put in with a hedge, not to exceed 3’9’ on top. Four
tennis courts would eventually be added, without lights, and soccer and baseball fields along with a children’s playground were also part of the design. We never regretted approving
any of this. As promised, the hedge has been regularly trimmed and the tennis courts remain lights free.
The current pickleball courts did not get our approval. I had emailed the committee our reasons for not approving them. The person receiving my email thanked me and told me he would
share them with the committee. I never heard a word back from anyone. Before I knew it, we had pickleball courts behind us.
I would like to share my reasons for not wanting the town to expand the number of pickleball courts that you suggest building:
1. It will change the atmosphere of our park.
2. It will bring people from other towns.
3. There will be more people on our children’s playground, picnic area, fields, jogging path, etc.
4. It will increase the traffic on our streets.
5. Parents will not feel as safe letting their children play at the park or walk or ride their bikes to school.
6. I’ve been told that many parents drop off and later pick up their children at the parking lot next to the tennis courts. With added cars, it would become unsafe.
7. Charlotte Wood Middle School should be very concerned and cautious about allowing their students to jog the trail, etc.
8. It would increase the amount of noise behind our houses. Pickleball has been starting at 6:30 AM. I’m not sure any of you would appreciate that!
Before you vote, please keep in mind the residents of our town, the safety of their children, and the “small town atmosphere that we strive for.
