Gail Massagli: It has come to my attention that there is to be a meeting on Wednesday the 10th of August regarding the above referenced subject. I would like to share the following input regarding this proposed project for consideration. * There is no information on the Danville City website other than the “opening” of the current courts earlier this year regarding the possible expansion of said facilities. * To my knowledge there was no communication regarding this matter disseminated to any of the affected households close to Osage Park * It’s difficult to respond without full knowledge of this project but I will address my concerns based on the knowledge I’ve found to date which only came to my attention yesterday afternoon. * My wife and I have lived here adjacent to Osage Park for over 41 years, when the park was just being started with the initial grading of the land. * Osage Park is one of Danville’s true assets that functions effectively as just that by definition, a PARK, which also happens to have the Charlotte Wood Middle School on its southern border. The Park is a multiple purpose facility with an appropriate balance of 4 baseball diamonds, 2 picnic areas, tennis courts (with 2 Pickle Ball court conversions from tennis courts), a spectacular rose garden, a paved walkway that weaves through all the dynamics of what is Osage Park and an amazing playground for our younger generation, 2 restroom facilities and one snack bar. * The present parking is adequate for most activities with overflow parking on our local adjacent streets usually only on busy weekends where there are Soccer or Baseball games with heavy schedules. An expansion of that parking was enhanced about 15 years ago to alleviate some of this overflow which was getting out of hand. There were open meetings on this matter at that time which allowed for significant input from the neighborhood. * As I understand this pending proposal there would be an additional 10 Pickleball courts added somewhere in Osage Park? * Issues of concern: * Noise, Pickleball is not a quiet game and the current configuration of courts already puts out more than enough noise * Parking is not adequate to accommodate this type of expansion which could amount to an estimated use of 40 + spaces if all courts are in use plus parking for those who previously were using the facilities as well as those who would follow those currently using the courts. * Safety, the additional flow of traffic these courts will create will exacerbate an already heavy traffic flow with Charlotte Wood school morning drop offs and afternoon pickups. The current reality is that these peaks are dangerous with parents rushing to facilitate these events and they in particular tend to park along El Capitan and Orange Blossom streets with the standard mode of transportation a SUV. Normal traffic flow by drivers trying to navigate through this “corridor” is an accident just waiting to happen especially with students darting between parked cars. Add to this Pickleball overflow parking and safety will be further compromised. * Emergency vehicles, with the need to quickly navigate through this maze simply could not squeeze between the SUV’s parked on both sides of the street. * Congestion, our peaceful neighborhood will become chaotic and Osage Park will become a “Pickleball Venue” with all the inherent and associated above noted issues as well as others yet defined. * Inadequate restroom facilities, this speaks for itself. The opening statement on the City of Danville website states that “We’re here to make people’s lives better …. an exceptional quality of life for its citizens”. If the City of Danville wishes to become known for its Pickleball facilities, then find an appropriate location that addresses these concerns, NOT OSAGE PARK!
