Re: Written Comment for 7/13 2022 Parks Commission meeting Agenda item 4.2
I am writing in support of expanding the Pickleball facilities at Osage Station Park. I have lived in Danville for 36 years and feel very fortunate to be able to play pickleball at
one of the premiere parks in the area. Since the opening of the pickleball courts at Osage last spring, I've noticed a tremendous increase in the number of people that come to Osage
to play pickleball.
As we all know the popularity of pickleball is rapidly growing and is drawing participation from all age
groups. Unfortunately the popularity has exceeded the limited facilities at Osage. My wife and I play on weekday
mornings (3-4 times a week) and it’s not uncommon to have 25-30 people who show up to
play. Expanding the pickleball facilities at Osage would be a welcomed enhancement to the recreation facilities at the park.
The pickleball community at Osage has self monitored "Open Play" procedures most mornings when there is a crowd. The "Open Play" structure helps to control who gets to play next and
organizes the wait que. "Open Play" also makes it friendly for a solo player to arrive not knowing anyone and be quickly partnered into a foursome to play with others in attendance.
Pickleball is not only a physical sport but it is also a means to meet and socialize with old friends and meet new ones. There are days when I spend more time chatting than playing
pickleball. Expanding the courts at Osage would surly draw many new people who avoid coming to Osage because of the morning crowds. I see this as an opportunity to meet new people
who share a common love for pickleball.
Osage could become one of nicest public pickleball facilities in the area. I can envision Osage someday hosting a city sponsored pickleball tournament that would draw attention to
our wonderful city and parks system.
Thanks you for taking the time to read my submitted comment.
