HomeMy WebLinkAbout5.1Creating Community through People, Arts, Parks & Programs JUNE ACTIVITIES • JULY MEETING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS REFLECT THE MISSION OF PARKS AND RECREATION: • Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place • Strengthen Safety and Security • Facilitate Community Problem Solving • Protect Environmental Resources • Provide Recreational Experiences • Support Economic Development • Promote Health and Wellness • Increase Cultural Unity • Foster Human Development STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY IMAGE AND SENSE OF PLACE Summer is here and the parks are filled with camps and being used by the public daily. Projects such as clearing clogged sinks at the Swain house, cleaning drinking fountains in both dog parks, potholing the large dog park, and mulching the labyrinth shrub areas at Hap Magee Ranch Park were all completed to ensure good user experiences. Weekly cleaning of the tennis courts at Diablo Vista Park, Monte Vista High School and Osage Station Park were also completed, including the replacement of the net at Osage Station Park. Two drinking fountains at Osage Station Park were adjusted and repaired for the public and the user groups use. Planted 50 new plants and installed 20 yards of mulch in the All Wars Memorial at Oak Hill Park as part of an ongoing enhancement project for this area. Two replacement trees were planted and 20 cubic yards of mulch were installed to enhance the lower planting area at Sycamore Valley Park, and one new tree was planted at Green Valley School to provide shade for the tables. STRENGTHEN SAFETY AND SECURITY Playgrounds are being played on all day with summer here and bi-weekly playground inspections continue at Hap Magee Ranch Park, Diablo Vista Park, Oak Hill Park, Osage Station Park, Sycamore Valley Park, Danville South Park and Montair School. Decomposed granite was added on the pathway to the labyrinth at Hap Magee Ranch Park to prevent low spots. Specialized contractors completed the annual cleaning, grooming and G-Max testing of Sycamore Valley Park and Diablo Vista Park synthetic turf fields. 1 OF 5 ATTACHMENT A These items may also reflect how Parks Make Life Better! Parks and Recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future by providing access to nature, outdoor space to play and exercise, free-time fun in positive spaces, and socializing and learning in a gathering place. PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES Irrigation checks and repairs and adjusting watering programs are being done at all park sites. Along with repairing the mainline near the labyrinth at Hap Magee Ranch Park, repairs to the irrigation pump at Green Valley School and replacement of an isolation valve at the Community Center were also completed. As part of our proactive, routine irrigation inspections, 20 repairs were completed at Osage Station Park, nine repairs at Oak Hill Park, seven repairs at Danville South Park, 12 repairs at Baldwin School, 13 repairs at Greenbrook School, while a 3” remote control valve was also replaced at Sycamore Valley Park. One tree was removed, stump ground, top dressed and reseeded in the turf area at Hap Magee Ranch Park. Additionally, four trees were removed and stump ground, and the area was top dressed and reseeded at Green Valley School. Safety tree pruning was completed at the Diablo Vista Park entrance and seven trees were pruned in the All-Wars Memorial. Fertilizing to enhance the turf at Greenbrook School occurred and weekly mowing, bi-weekly edging, and monthly weed abatement and rodent control continues in all our parks. PROVIDE RECREATIONAL EXPERIENCES Summer camp has begun for another year of fun and our trained staff are ready to go! Our 4-day staff training consisted of games, songs, policies, team building activities and more. The training turned all our camp staff into rockstars ready to take on Camp Danville this summer. What would summer camp be if there weren’t fun field trips as well?! Town of Danville summer camps have kicked off with the classic Oakland Zoo trip, Rockin’ Jump fun and of course Chabot Space & Science Center. Little Acorn Camp has made a return after several summers of hiatus. This camp invites our littlest community members to come to play and learn the structure and expectations of group activity. Campers enjoy scenic Hap Magee Ranch Park while participating in arts, crafts, and park games. Parents are invited to join in on family fun Fridays to experience hands-on camp activities with their campers each week. Another Senior Center Craft Corner sold out for the 4th of July craft! Participants got to make a rustic tabletop American flag out of painted 2 x 4 pieces. These Craft Corners have a group following that enjoys returning season after season! 2 OF 5 PROMOTE HEALTH & WELLNESS On Friday June 17, approximately 100 movie goers attended our first Moonlight Movie for this summer to view the latest Spiderman movie “Spiderman: No Way Home” This event also played host to several superheroes who made time to attend the event. A Sacramento based non-profit organization called “The League of Heroes Inspired are a group of dedicated art therapists and motivational speakers whose goal is to help inspire children who are victims of trauma and lifting the spirits of children fighting off illnesses. CPC For the Valley also attended the event providing snacks and ice cream to attendees. INCREASE CULTURAL UNITY On June 12 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, in collaboration with the School of Rock in San Ramon, outdoor showcase was held featuring 19 talented musicians between the ages of 8 to 19 performed to passersby, parents and family. Music styles ranged from Classical, to Rock and Roll, Broadway and original work. Lunch program resumed for in-house lunches on Mondays. Attendance ranges in 15-20 participants, also at or above pre-COVID numbers. Town staff are excited to see new participants’ faces in the building and they like to stay for the free movie after. What a Monday Funday! 3 OF 5 4 OF 5 FOSTER HUMAN DEVELOPMENT On June 15 at 11:00 am, the Town of Danville and Danville Library sponsored event, Kidchella, returned to the Town Green to promote reading and learning along with a free concert featuring The Raytones. Ray the Rhino made an appearance bringing much needed fun to the children and their families. The event included a storytime, a concert, games and activities and arts and crafts. On June 9th the Art Gallery hosted the 12th Annual Juried Exhibition Opening Reception for the all photo show, CLICK! There are more than 30 photographers featured in this exhibition which was judged by Executive Director of PhotoAlliance SF. A fun evening was had by all who attended. There’s a photo in this show for everyone! Babysitting for Beginners has returned and tweens and teens are enjoying learning the ins and outs of becoming a babysitter! With our contact instructor, participants learn how to play games, bedtime strategies, what to do in an emergency and general first aid. Babysitting for Beginners was very successful and had a full group of 30 participants. 5 OF 5 The Writing Group has returned to the Danville Senior Center after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus. The group members are looking forward to authoring some great things in the Meeting Room on Friday mornings. We look forward to hearing what they write! PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTER On June 25, Music in the Park returned to the 1990’s with a new band called “Mad About You, the Ultimate Tribute to the 90’s” From 6pm to 8pm attendees sang and partied like it was 1999 with classics such as Cher, The Spice Girls, Third-Eye Blind and many more hits. 350 plus people were in attendance for this blast from the past concert.
