STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY IMAGE AND SENSE OF PLACE
As school comes to an end and summer approaches the parks will start being used for more
activities, including camps of many kinds. In preparation of this, a variety of big and small
maintenance activities continue, everything from safety inspections to drinking fountain repairs
- including three at Osage Station Park. To prepare our furry friends for summer, the fountains
in the Canine Corral dog park were cleaned, holes in the grass were filled and repairs to broken
fence boards in the large dog park were completed. Also at Hap Magee Ranch Park, a new
Sycamore tree was installed in the front of the park following removal of a failing eucalyptus
tree, the mailbox was repaired, the garbage disposal was replaced in the Swain house, and an
HVAC unit was replaced at the Magee house.
Graffiti was removed and three garbage can caps were installed and painted at Oak Hill Park,
along with another 15 garbage can caps being installed and painted at Osage Station Park.
The frontage of Sycamore Valley Park was enhanced with 30 cubic yards of mulch, and minor
repairs to the garbage encloser at Diablo Vista Park were completed.
STRENGTHEN SAFETY AND SECURITY
Summer camps will be here soon, so two emergency signs were replaced, safety and
maintenance inspections were completed at the Swain house, and a failing Eucalyptus tree was
removed at Hap Magee Ranch Park. Bi-weekly playground inspections were performed at
Diablo Vista Park, Hap Magee Ranch Park, Osage Station Park, Oak Hill Park, Sycamore Valley
Park, Danville South Park and Montair School. Two holes in the playground safety surface
were repaired at Osage Station Park, where pot holing of the sports fields was also performed.

These items may also reflect how Parks Make Life Better! Parks and Recreation make lives and
communities better now and in the future by providing access to nature, outdoor space to play
and exercise, free-time fun in positive spaces, and socializing and learning in a gathering place.
During the month of May, Town Staff are certifying 16
new lifeguards for the community. A handful of these new
lifeguards will be working with the Town and the other
new lifeguards will be working in various aquatics settings
throughout Danville.
FACILITATE COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING
The Danville Senior Center partnered with Meals on Wheels to provide a Tablet Training for
Older Adults class on May 21. Participants were provided with iPads for the class and had
the opportunity to get many of their questions answered following an instructional session.
PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES
Irrigation checks and repairs continue during this time in all the parks, repairing four
sprinklers at Danville South Park, a main line break by the labyrinth and replacement valve
at Hap Magee Ranch Park, as well as repairing a main line at Diablo Vista Park. In advance
of Memorial Day, five irrigation repairs, aeration and seeding of the turf was completed at
the All Wars Memorial area at Oak Hill Park. Two new rotors were added to the irrigation
system for proper coverage at Osage Station Park.
Tree work continues, with two Chinese Pistache trees removed from both Osage Station Park
and Sycamore Valley Park. Pruning of six Willow trees at Oak Hill Park and three Oak trees
in the back parking lot of Hap Magee Ranch Park, as well as of six Eucalyptus trees in front
of the park, were all completed. Small, underutilized turf areas in various locations are being
replaced with material that requires less water, as the Town continues to diligently manage
our water resources.

SUPPORT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
On Wednesday, May 4, the Town of Danville hosted its 7th annual Star Wars celebration.
The day started with a free scavenger hunt where participants had to look for famous Star
Wars characters at Downtown Danville businesses. The first 100 participants to finish the
scavenger hunt received a goodie bag full of prizes sponsored by the Recreation, Arts &
Community Services Department and local businesses. Afterward, families and fans then
fired up their lightsabers to become Jedi certified on the Town Green. At Jedi training, over
250 kids actively participated in a variety of Jedi obstacle courses, crafts, pod racing, slack
lines, and zip-lining through the air and they all received an official Jedi Academy certificate
from a Jedi Master Yoda. The 501st legion also appeared with Darth Vader, Generals, and a
variety of stormtroopers from a planet far, far, away. This year also included a special lottery
for fifty kids who signed up for the Jedi Training to experience a special training with Master
Andy Zandy at the Village Theatre. The day was an extraterrestrial good time with over 450
participants participating in this year’s activities celebrating everything Star Wars. This year,
