Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission - Special Meeting
Summary of Actions
May 11, 2022
1. CALL TO ORDER
The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was
called to order by Chair Diamond at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was conducted by
teleconference only.
1.1 Roll Call
Administrative Assistant Gail Massagli conducted the roll call for attendance:

1.2 Announcements
Gail Massagli, Administrative Assistant, provided information regarding the
format of the meeting and instructions for public comment.

4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION/ACTION
4.1 Approval of the Summary of Actions from the March 16, 2022, Parks,
Recreation and Arts Commission Special Meeting
MOTION BY VICE-CHAIR FALCON, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER NEARY, TO
APPROVE THE SUMMARY OF ACTIONS OF THE MARCH 16, 2022, PARKS,
RECREATION, AND ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING
MOTION CARRIED 7-0-0-1; COMMISSIONER MESIC EXCUSED
4.2 Review Concepts for the Oak Hill Park Playground Project and Provide
Staff with a Recommendation for Action
Maintenance Services Director Dave Casteel provided an overall review of the
updated project and reviewed the scope of work the Commission discussed from
the March 16, 2022, meeting.
Chair Diamond opened Item 4.2 to public comment.
Jim Donnelly, stated Danville recently adopted an age-friendly road map and if
considering age-friendly, he supports the pour in place over the engineered wood
fiber and would like the Commission to consider this when making their decision.
He stated if the Commission chose the engineered wood fiber, grandparents and
seniors, would not be able to participate with their kids.
Chair Diamond closed Item 4.2 to public comments.

SHADE STRUCTURES TO PROVIDE THE MOST SHADE AND SEATING FOR PLAY
EQUIPMENT. IF NOT APPROVED BY TOWN COUNCIL, THE PREFERENCE WOULD
BE IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:
1. OPTION B WITH POUR IN PLACE AND SHADE STRUCTURES -
$1,340,000
2. OPTION B WITH POUR IN PLACE - $1,200,000
3. OPTION B WITH ENGINEERED WOOD FIBER AND SHADE
STRUCTURES - $960,000
4. OPTION B WITH ENGINEERED WOOD FIBER - $820,000

5. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS
5.1 Parks, Recreation and Arts Strategic Plan Ideas and Priority List
Discussion – Budget
Director Henry Perezalonso reported the Town Council Budget Study sessions
started May 10, 2022 and will continue for the next few weeks. The Town’s
budget document can be accessed as an attachment on the Danville Town
Council May 10, 2022, Agenda.
Mr. Perezalonso reported the Budget subcommittee met and the objective will be
to deploy and identify funded projects that are priorities. The subcommittee will
continue to review the budget and the annual reviews. As the subcommittees meet
and focus on projects, additional subcommittees will be included, and projects will
be brought back to the Commission as bigger topics for discussion.
Mr. Perezalonso requested the Commission review the Recreations, Arts and
Community Services Budget Operating Expenses and CIP Projects discussed and
proposed to the Town Council.
5.2 Recreation, Arts, and Community Services Director’s Report
Director Henry Perezalonso announced the Recreation, Arts and Community
Services Department has hired Kylie Crandall, Sports and Fitness Coordinator.

5.3 Commissioner’s Reports and Comments
Commissioner Neary provided a summary of the Arts Advisory Board’s “Picture
This” temporary public art exhibit partnering with the Tri-Valley. A Call for
Artists will begin May 12, 2022.
Commissioner Joyce shared pictures of Laguna Niguel’s arts, amphitheater, and
shade structures in their recreation parks as beautiful examples for the
Commission to view.
Commissioner Donovan attended Danville’s Senior 10th Year Anniversary party
in April and shared how successful the event was. He also attended the
Eggstravaganza event in April on Danville’s Town Green and complimented the
Town staff running the events and the Danville Youth Council volunteering.
Commissioner Strauch reported the Art Gallery’s Women Who Dare Opening
Reception was a huge success and well attended. She recommended the
Commission consider the addition of another off-leash dog park in Danville due
to increasing demand.
Commissioner Brandeis volunteered for the Eggstravaganza event and shared its
success. She provided Danville Youth Council (DYC) updates from the Spring
Earth Day event, a mental health-focused event called Relax and Reset, and the
last DYC meeting welcoming six new members.
Vice Chair Falcon recommended the Commission review the two Budget
documents, stating it is beneficial in providing foundational knowledge.
Chair Diamond shared he appreciated the respectful dialogue in tonight’s
discussion on behalf of serving the community.
