HomeMy WebLinkAbout4.2 ARTS ADVISORY BOARD STAFF REPORT 4.2 TO: Arts Advisory Board May 11, 2022 SUBJECT: Recommend Appointment of one Arts Advisory Board Member to the “Picture This” Artist Selection Committee BACKGROUND In 2018, the Town of Danville began its public art program with the Danville Community Pianos project. In subsequent years, this project was followed by the Dogs of Danville, Hearts Around Hearts, and Shrumen Lumen exhibits. As the Town continues to provide community public art, this summer, the Town will be partnering with other Tri-Valley cities to create a Tri-Valley temporary public art exhibit titled “Picture This.” The exhibit will feature oversized wooden picture frames uniquely painted by local artists and placed in prominent locations around the Tri-Valley. The frames are intended for visitors to take a picture within the frame featuring the artwork and unique background, then share it via social media. The picture frames will be approximately 4 feet wide by 3 feet tall and mounted 3-4 feet above the ground. The decorated area would be an approximately 5-inch-wide frame border that artists would be commissioned to paint. The project is inspired by "Outside the Frame," created by Carlos Campos and implemented by Santa Cruz County Parks. More information on their project and examples can be found at https://www.countyparkfriends.org/outsidetheframe.html. DISCUSSION Local artists will be commissioned to paint the frames uniquely related to the project and the frame locations (i.e., parks, libraries, iconic places in the town/city). Staff is planning for a total of at least ten frames for Danville. Sufficient funds are budgeted and appropriated to cover the cost of this project, including the building of structures, artist stipend, installation, and marketing. The project schedule will begin with a call for artists to be released in mid-May and advertised to local artists. A selection committee consisting of staff and one member from each participating City's/Town Arts Advisory Board or Commission will review the submissions to select the art concepts for the frames. It is recommended that the Arts Advisory Board appoint one member to participate in the “Picture This” art exhibit selection committee scheduled to meet on May 31, 2022. RECOMMENDATION Recommend appointment of one Arts Advisory Board member to the “Picture This” artist selection committee. Prepared by: Jessica Wallner Recreation Superintendent
