SUBJECT: Resolution No. 37-2022, approving the display of the Rainbow Flag during
the month of June 2022
BACKGROUND
On June 16, 2020, the Danville Town Council adopted Resolution No. 46-2020, approving
an Outdoor Flagpole Display Policy for the Town. That policy provides, in part, that the
Town Council may approve the display of commemorative flags on the flagpole at the Town
Library/Community Center. The policy also provides that the Council shall only consider
a request for display of a commemorative flag if the request is made by at least one member
of the Town Council. Any approvals are valid for the year in which approved for a
maximum of 31 days.
DISCUSSION
Pursuant to the policy, the Town Council has previously approved the display of the
Rainbow Flag for the month of June in 2020 and 2021. At the Town Council’s annual
Planning and Goal Setting Workshop in February 2022, members of the Council requested
that the question of displaying the Rainbow Flag in June of 2022 be placed on an agenda for
consideration, consistent with the Town’s policy. The attached resolution contains the
necessary findings for this approval.

RESOLUTION NO. 37-2022
APPROVING THE DISPLAY OF THE RAINBOW FLAG DURING THE MONTH
OF JUNE 2022
WHEREAS, the Town of Danville has a diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and
Questioning (“LGBTQ”) community, whose members live, attend school and work in
Danville; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Danville is committed to supporting visibility, dignity and
equity for all members of the community and preventing discrimination and bullying
based on sexual orientation and gender identity; and
WHEREAS, June is a symbolic month in which the LGBTQ community, family and
supporters come together in various celebrations of pride, with cities and towns across
the country recognizing and celebrating June as LGBTQ Pride Month; and
WHEREAS, the Rainbow flag has been recognized since the 1970’s as a symbol of LGBTQ
pride; and
WHEREAS, the Town’s Outdoor Flagpole Display Policy, in part, allows the display of
commemorative flags, such as the Rainbow flag, on the flagpole at the Town
Library/Community Center, if requested by a member of the Town Council and
approved by the Council; and
WHEREAS, members of the Town Council have requested that the Town consider
approving the display of the Rainbow flag for the month of June 2022 in order to
symbolize the Town’s viewpoint in celebrating the diversity of and support for the
Town’s LGBTQ community during Pride Month; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council approves the display of the Rainbow flag
for the month of June 2022 in a manner consistent with the Town’s Outdoor Flagpole
Display Policy.
