MEETING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS REFLECT THE MISSION OF PARKS AND RECREATION: • Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place • Strengthen Safety and Security • Facilitate Community Problem Solving • Protect Environmental Resources • Provide Recreational Experiences • Support Economic Development • Promote Health and Wellness • Increase Cultural Unity • Foster Human Development STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY IMAGE AND SENSE OF PLACE Zentangle combines mindfulness and art to reduce stress and increase the practice of gratitude. The Danville Senior Center offered a Buzz Session with a Zentangle demonstration on March 22. Each participant enjoyed adult coloring, gratitude exercises and guided breathing to promote concentration and creativity. STRENGTHEN SAFETY AND SECURITY Annual testing of the fire alarm systems at the Hap Magee Ranch Park buildings was completed, including repairs to faulty zones and replacement of the backup batteries for the Swain and Magee houses alarm systems. Bi-weekly playground inspections were performed at Hap Magee Ranch Park, Osage Station Park, Oak Hill Park, Diablo Vista Park, Sycamore Valley Park, Danville South Park and Montair School. Tennis courts were blown off to remove debris and the nets were adjusted weekly at Monte Vista High School and Diablo Vista Park. At the Osage Station Park tennis courts, the nets were adjusted and two new center straps and hooks were installed. Potholes were filled on sports field turf at Sycamore Valley Park, Osage Station Park, Diablo Vista Park, and Baldwin School. Repairs were made to cyclone fencing, backstops, and safety nets at Diablo Vista Park, Sycamore Valley Park, and Green Valley School, along with removal and replacement of backstop boards and tightening and replacement of missing bolts on backstops at Sycamore Valley Park. The vita course at Oak Hill Park was re-graded to better facilitate recreational use and future cross country meets. 1 OF 5 ATTACHMENT A These items may also reflect how Parks Make Life Better! Parks and Recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future by providing access to nature, outdoor space to play and exercise, free-time fun in positive spaces, and socializing and learning in a gathering place. FACILITATE COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING Public Information Officer Nicola Shihab presented a Buzz Session on March 29 at the Danville Senior Center titled “How to Stay Informed with Danville News.” Her presentation included a variety of ways that residents can access the most up-to-date information for the Town, including navigating NextDoor, website updates and more! PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES Monthly inspections, cleaning and grooming of the synthetic fields at Diablo Vista Park and Sycamore Valley Park were completed. Aerating, slit seeding and treating sports field turf with organic fertilizer were completed at Sycamore Valley Park, Diablo Vista Park, Osage Station Park, Baldwin School, Montair School, Vista Grande School, and Green Valley School. Monthly maintenance of the Oak Hill Park pond, Railroad Avenue fountain, and Sycamore Valley Park fountains were performed, including repairs to the waterfall and replacement of skimmer basket screens at Sycamore Valley Park. Monthly rodent control was performed at all park and school sites. PROVIDE RECREATIONAL EXPERIENCES Middle schoolers had a night out at the Diablo Vista Teen Center on March 18 from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. What could be better? 25 teens ages 10-13 years old participated in relay races, basketball challenges, giant Jenga, launching chickens, and board games. They also enjoyed snacks, pizza, and meeting new friends. On March 2, 2022, the Town of Danville celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. All Things came from near and far to participate in crafts, activities, & story time based on several Dr. Seuss books. Featured activities included a story walk, character vote, and a Fishy Word scramble to support Read Across America Day. 2 OF 5 3 OF 5 Teams ran to different local Danville businesses to complete different tasks like Danville trivia at the Museum of San Ramon Valley, blindfold tastings at Hazy BBQ, putting together outfits at Beyond Active, and much more! Congrats to the ‘Dragons’ for taking home the first- place basket which included a karaoke microphone, Danville swag, and other fun items! PROMOTE HEALTH & WELLNESS Danville Senior Center has expanded its evening ballroom classes to include Foxtrot and Salsa, which began in March on Wednesday evenings. These classes are offered in addition to two levels of West Coast Swing, which has gradually gained popularity with participants 18 years and older. Breakfast with Friends is back in 2022! Senior participants enjoyed breakfast at Black Bear Diner and got to catch up with old friends and make new ones. SUPPORT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The Danville Amazing Race went... Amazing! 9 teams of four went racing around Danville on Saturday, March 19, all competing to win the grand prize! 4 OF 5 INCREASE CULTURAL UNITY The Town of Danville was excited to host the first St. Patrick’s celebration on March 16. One hundred families adorned their green attire for an afternoon of crafts and games themed around Irish culture. Participants were invited to build spud buddies, Leprechaun traps, find pots of gold, and enjoy the music of Ireland. Additional Storybook reading and Highland games encouraged families to explore the Oak Hill Park Community Center and pond. This event made an excellent expansion to our spring events offerings. On March 26, The Village Theatre held a screening of the popular musical “The Greatest Showman,” This viewing was a special sing-a-long version which had the words on the screen during the songs for the audience to sing along with. This event had over 120 people in attendance and raffle prizes were given out to three lucky participants prior to the start of the movie. FOSTER HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The Tri-Valley job fair was a success after taking a year off due to COVID. 400 teens seeking employment came to the Dublin Senior Center on Saturday March 5 in their best dressed outfits. Teens had the opportunity to meet future employers, receive tips and tricks on building their resume and even had the opportunity to perform mock interviews with professionals in various fields. 5 OF 5 On March 24, the Art Gallery hosted an opening reception for the newest art exhibition, Women Who Dare! An art show that features the talents of the local artist group Bay Area Studio Artists (BASA) and their captivating portraits of trailblazing women from history and today. This exhibit features women who made an impact! PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTER Spring is here, and many activities have begun in the parks! To help ensure great experiences, a variety of maintenance activities have been completed, in particular at Hap Magee Ranch Park: the gazebo roofing was repaired, completing the renovation project; the drinking fountains in both dog parks were adjusted; the fountain drain and concrete pad were replaced in the small dog park; and the entrance gate to the large dog park and the fence near the labyrinth received repairs. Park drinking fountains have been repaired, inspected, and turned on at all sites. Seven such repairs were completed at Osage Station Park, along with one potable mainline repair. One posting board was repaired at Sycamore Valley Park and sand was added to the play area at Osage Station Park.
