Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission – Special Meeting Summary of Actions Jan 12, 2022 1. CALL TO ORDER The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was called to order by Chair Diamond at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was conducted by teleconference only. 1.1 Roll Call Administrative Assistant Gail Massagli conducted the roll call for attendance: Present: Randall Diamond, Chair Adan Falcon, Vice Chair Alesia Strauch, Commissioner Kevin Donovan, Commissioner Jane Joyce, Commissioner Jenna Mesic, Commissioner Excused: Charles Neary, Commissioner and Sabrina Brandeis, Youth Representative 1.2 Announcements Gail Massagli, Administrative Assistant, provided information regarding the format of the meeting and instructions for public comment. 2. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA There were no changes to the Order of the Agenda. 3. “FOR THE GOOD OF THE TOWN” Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission – Special Meeting Summary of Actions January 12, 2022 2 Councilmember, Dave Fong, introduced himself as the commission’s Town Council liaison and appreciated the opportunity to be part of the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission. 4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION/ACTION 4.1 Approval of the Summary of Actions from the November 10, 2021, Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission Special Meeting MOTION BY VICE CHAIR FALCON, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER MESIC, TO APPROVE THE SUMMARY OF ACTIONS OF THE NOVEMBER 10, 2021, PARKS, RECREATION, AND ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING MOTION CARRIED 6-0-0-2; COMMISSIONER NEARY AND YOUTH REPRESENTATIVE BRANDEIS EXCUSED 4.2 Review Concept for Oak Hill Park Playground Equipment Replacement Project and Provide Staff with Recommendation of Action Maintenance Services Director Dave Casteel provided a PowerPoint presentation on the Oak Hill Park playground equipment project providing preliminary examples of nature and contemporary themes of the existing footprint at Oak Hill Park. The Commission reviewed the Concept for the Oak Hill Park Playground Replacement Project, provided the following direction to staff and requested that the item return to the Commission at a later date: 1. Determine and confirm budget 2. Confirm scope of work and if landscape architect is needed 3. Review staffing resources and timing 5. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS 5.1 Parks, Arts, and Community Services Department Strategic Plan Ideas and Priority List Discussion Director of Recreation, Arts and Community Services, Henry Perezalonso, asked the commission to individually choose an area of interest to create subcommittees Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission – Special Meeting Summary of Actions January 12, 2022 3 from the seven main topic areas in the Strategic Plan and Priority List from the October 15, 2021 workshop and Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission November 10, 2021 meeting. The seven topic areas being focused on moving forward included Town Green and Arts District, Pickleball, Transportation, Park Sites, Budget, Community Outreach, and Social Vision. The subcommittee names will be shared with the Arts Advisory Board. 5.2 Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director’s Report Director Henry Perezalonso reported on his department’s updates for programs and indoor and outdoor rentals. He discussed a winter program camp was slightly impacted by COVID-19 having to shut down halfway through the camp. Mr. Perezalonso reported the Town is continuing to work on the Town Offices move to the new location at 500 La Gonda Way, Danville. Mr. Perezalonso provided information on the Recreation Expo and Open House which will be on February 26 at multiple locations. Discounts will be available with more details coming at a later date. 5.3 Commissioner’s Reports and Comments Commissioner Donovan attended the Town’s Mayor’s Installation on December 7 and commended Jane Joyce for her 16 years of service. Commissioner Strauch attended the Town’s Employee Recognition Luncheon on December 15, commending the employees for their level of commitment and time they have served for the community. She inquired about learning more about the relationship and responsibilities between the Town and the school district, particularly on issues surrounding the shared school parks, public on school property during school hours with dogs, and addressing the Baldwin Elementary playground damage outside of school hours. She mentioned she was notified through Facebook about a Town of Danville survey for reimagining the downtown’s future and is encouraging people to take the survey. Commissioner Mesic reported she shared the Downtown’s survey with several contacts encouraging people to take the survey.
