MEETING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS REFLECT THE MISSION OF PARKS AND RECREATION: •Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place •Strengthen Safety and Security •Facilitate Community Problem Solving •Protect Environmental Resources •Provide Recreational Experiences •Support Economic Development •Promote Health and Wellness •Increase Cultural Unity •Foster Human Development STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY IMAGE AND SENSE OF PLACE The Diablo Vista Park sports field lighting project is complete! The project, funded by the Sports Alliance, went extremely well and the new poles and LED fixtures will add hundreds of hours of playability for a variety of sports user groups. As part of the project, Town staff aerated and slit seeded the grass and completed necessary irrigation repairs. The sports field and dog park moratorium ended on February 25, 2022, and many projects were completed during the closure. At Hap Magee Ranch Park, 110 cubic yards of bark mulch were added in the dog park, 12 benches were pressure washed, wooden fence boards were repaired, the turf in the small dog park was aerated and soil enhancer was applied to the new turf area in the large dog park. Also at Hap Magee Ranch Park, repairs were made to the brick drinking fountain, the main sewer line at the Cottage was unclogged, and the hydraulic door closer in the women’s public restroom was re-attached. STRENGTHEN SAFETY AND SECURITY Bi-weekly playground inspections continue at Osage Station Park, Oak Hill Park, Sycamore Valley Park, Diablo Vista Park, Hap Magee Ranch Park, Danville South Park and Montair School. Ball field renovations were completed prior to the start of league play, including finding base pegs, adding field mix, ripping, replacing a damaged backstop board, and re-grading all Town-maintained fields at Sycamore Valley Park, Diablo Vista Park, Osage Station Park, Baldwin School, Montair School, Green Valley School and Vista Grande’ School. Additional work included removal of straw wattle and silt fencing, installing a new pitching rubber, and replacing a water valve on the softball field at Green Valley School. 1 OF 4 ATTACHMENT B These items may also reflect how Parks Make Life Better! Parks and Recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future by providing access to nature, outdoor space to play and exercise, free-time fun in positive spaces, and socializing and learning in a gathering place. Monthly synthetic turf inspections were performed and included removal of damaged header board and the cleaning and grooming of both synthetic fields at Sycamore Valley Park and Diablo Vista Park. Weekly blowing off, cleaning, and adjusting nets on tennis and pickleball courts was performed at Osage Station Park, Diablo Vista Park and Monte Vista High School. FACILITATE COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING On February 8, the Danville Senior Center hosted the first ever “Coffee with the Commissioners” with the Senior Advisory Commission. All 5 Commissioners were available to chat with residents and enjoy coffee and donuts with the public. The event took place on the Danville Senior Center patio for increased visibility and to allow for social distancing. PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES The annual pruning of 1,417 memorial roses and adding soil for new tree berms at Osage Station Park was completed. Repairs were completed for the pond at Sycamore Valley Park, where a new willow tree was also planted. PROVIDE RECREATIONAL EXPERIENCES Indoor sports programs continued to run through February such as Skyhawks Tot and Preschool sports, Wee Hoop Basketball classes, Arora Tennis classes, Karate for youth and adults, and adult Tennis lessons have been full of new and returning participants! The Danville Youth Council enjoyed their Valentine’s Day meeting together by partaking in activities that reminded each other just how much they appreciated the DYC. The DYC Chief Information Officer also created a video to showcase the members favorite parts of the DYC. The video included the words such as supportive, passionate, motivated and caring. 2 OF 4 3 OF 4 and contract instructors. The Danville Community Center and Town Green provided fun for all ages with the Arts & Rec on the Go van. Partcipants at the Village Theatre & Art Gallery had the opportunity to paint a silk canvas with different colored dyes. At the Senior Center, the Community Hall was set up with tables for interested renters to get an idea of how their event could look. And not to forget, Auggie the Acorn made an appearance too! The Danville Senior Center hosted its third Craft Corner in February. This month, the craft was card making, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Participants enjoyed a guided lesson on cardmaking and received a Valentine’s Day themed goodie. On February 22, the Youth and Teen program area, happily hosted yet another fully attended Kids” Day Out. Even when school is on break, kids need a place to go! Staff kept 16 elementary- aged participants engaged all day with a wide variety of activities. Some of the fun highlights from the day include outdoor games, a finger-painting bug hunt, and an expedition across our new bridge at the Town Green! The day was cap stoned with a cinematic classic, Aladin (1992) projected to a brand-new audience on the big screen. On February 26, the Recreation, Arts & Community Services Department hosted its 12th Annual Recreation Expo & Open House. This year all 3 Downtown Recreation facilities were open to the public.Participants were able to register for Spring and Summer programs in person as well as meet Town Staff 4 OF 4 INCREASE CULTURAL UNITY Danville once again brings the thrill of Irish dance to a community center near you! Hear the flutter of feet bounding to the jigs and reel from the Emerald Isle. February 3rd marked the start of a fresh season of Irish dance just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Stay tuned to track the progress of our beginner performers as they learn the foundation of cultural dance. FOSTER HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The Matter of Balance class continues to be popular at the Danville Senior Center. Participants learn about removing hazards in the home, do exercises to strengthen muscles and improve balance and are taught by a certified Matter of Balance instructor. PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTER In the month of February, Facilities Management has picked up dramatically with both indoor and outdoor rentals. The picnic rentals typically stop through winter but this year, the applications have continued to come in throughout February. With indoor rentals, the number of inquires have increased dramatically. We are giving facility tours almost every day and processing rentals from now through the calendar year.
