However, this tree is supported with a large structure. Therefore. we recommend taking advantage of the structure and using it in coordination with the banner program. advertising town events such as a seasonal art fair. These banners should be made of a material that would allow wind to pass through and would not affect driver visibility. In addition to the oak tree, gateways have a critical dual function owing to their prominence. They are key contributors to the image and character of the Town of Danville through their size, shape and material. They also support pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding by accentuating entries and prominent paths. We have recommended primary concept design changes fertile three key gateways into Downtown Danville, noted on the vehicular circulation diagram (section 2.43 • 1-680 and Diablo Rd. • Ham Ave. and Railroad Ave. • San Ramon Valley Blvd. south of the Iron Horse Trail crossing Material and design vocabulary Generally, gateways should utilize the materials of the new wayfinding and signage program and Incorporate planting and lighting elements. The text and Danville identity should contrast with the background material and be located ata height easily viewed by passing vehicles. For larger roads such as San Ramon Valley Blvd., consider locating a smaller entry sign in the. traffic median. The installation and placement of highway signage are under the authority of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and guidelines for 1-680 must he in accordance With the California MUTCD. Basad on research and discussions with Caltrans staff, the Town may install supplemental signage on 1-660 to direct travellers to a city's•civic center area: Based on the limited options available, the recommendation is to install a Targe sign which reads "Downtown Danville NextExh" before the southbound and northbound exits to Diablo Road. As required by Caltrans, the cost for fabrication and installation of the signs would be Incurred by the Town. 2.9 BANNER PROGRAM Bens are currently e installed within the down e. The current banners are changed seasonally and are generic in character li.e. American flag design for summer). We recommend they be utilized for advertising local events, to generate interest and excitement within the area. Should the Town elect to pursue changes to the banner program, we recommend that banners be coordinated with the banner program recommended on the oak tree structure, in section 21 EExisting banners swa # DANVILLE Danville Downtown Master Plan Initial Impressions & Ideas Encourage Circulation from Iron Horse Trail to Downtown t 7 Downtown intersections - .
