SAFEGUARDING THE LIVES, RIGHTS, AND PROPERTY OF THE PEOPLE WE SERVE
DANVILLE
POLICE
DEPARTMENT
ERE, OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF LIFE
The Police Department held its first
Citizens Academy this Spring since
the start of the pandemic. The class
of residents joined officers virtually
for weekly engagements. Officers
provided insight into the took and
techniques used to serve the
community while building
relationships with these community
members. As restrictions loosened,
the Police Department was able to
hold one in-person class and bring
students to experience the Force
Options Simulator. Students received
scenario -based training similar to
what officers regularly receive. One
student wrote a response to the field
day stating, "The force options
simulator really showed how things
can turn south in an instant in the
field."
As the restrictions loosened, the
Police Department met residents at
local coffee shops and restaurants
through their Coffee with the Cops
program. This represented the first
time since the COVID-19 Pandemic
that officers conducted in-person
public engagement.
"The force options
simulator really
showed how things
can turn south in an
instant in the field."
2021 Citizen Academy Graduate
Officers will continue with their in-
person engagement efforts so long
as the interactions are safe and fall
within current health guidance, to
continue to build outstanding
relationships with those we serve.

Staff and elected officials were able
to connect with various
neighborhoods throughout Town on
the first Tuesday in August at the
National Night Out event.
Sworn staff, professional staff,
volunteers, and members from the
Recreation, Arts, and Community
Services team all joined in a
community -building event that
sought to promote police -community
partnerships and neighborhood
camaraderie. National Night Out was
canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-
19 pandemic.
Staff visited nine different
neighborhoods and enjoyed spending
time with community members and
providing updates on Town provided
services.
"National Night Out is
a great opportunity
for the Police
Department to show
how grateful we are
to serve such a caring
community."
Chief of Police Allan Shields, August 2021

car Chief Shields.
wanted to take a moment to bring two of your officers to your attention.
1 recently hada fa-rly major vehicle accident within the borders of Danville. I had my 12 -year-
old daughter in the car and the whole event was extremely traumatic. We are ok, and
thankfully the other party is also =and while the aftemnath of an accident like this will take
months to resolve and has caused me a lot of stress,1 was truly overwhelmed by the quality
and kindness nfynLIF officers_ Officers these days often get a lot of negative publicity and I know
their job k herd and must often be confrontational, 1 think it would be easy for officers to
become reserved and removed in their other interactions with people even when not dealing
with criminals_ Your officers responded to the scene quickly, assessed and addressed
immediate needs efficiently, and were extremely good at keeping everything calm. O-fficer
Vincent Barbaro helped me initially, checkingin wrath me repeatedly to make sure I was okay,
taking statements and ensuring that I understood the next steps to getting my vehicle removed.
I was so shaken I couldn't figure out how to even use rnyr phone quite honestly, and he arranged
for AAA to be called on my behalf. When AAA came the driver was irrrmediatel+ diverted away
from my tow and I was told to waft for a different tow vehicle (this all is on A.AA). After a wit of
about 3 hours AAA called me back to tell me they, just were not arming_
This left me on the side of the road, in the dark, in my broken car, in an unfamiliar place,
overwhelmed, crying, trying to figure out what to do. Almost immediately after I got off the
phone with AAA, Officer Barbero called just to check in and make sure I was home safely, and
that I was still doing alright. When 1 informed him that I was still at the accident site, he and his
fellow Officer, Emily Neabeak returned immediately, Officer Neabeak brought me water and
some snacks and she made me feel like I was not all .alone_ While Officer Barbero tried again to
get Information about towing my car, Officer Neabeak helped me remember that everything
was okay, and no one was seriously injured. When Officer Barbero joined us after being unable
to get AAA to respond, together they helped me contact a private towing company, and made
sure 1 had a ride to get home. Both officers shared personal stories and got me out of panic
mode; seeing the dog decals on my car they told me about their own dogs and just made me
feel human again. Together they made r'efeel that I was important, that even though I was
only passing through Danville, I was under their care. I have been tellingetireryone 'What an
amazing experience this has been. Of course, it was awful, and I truly hope I arr neer in
another actident — but if it had to happen — I could not be more im pressed with the extreme
human kindness, professionalism, and just overall quality of the Officers Who shepherded tide
through the experience. They are a credit to your Department and the residents of Danville are
Jucky to have such wonderful. passionate, Officers serving their community,
in Gratitude,
