PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS
STAFF REPORT
TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission May 12, 2021
SUBJECT: Integrating the Town Green and Arts District into Public Art Exhibits
Discussion
BACKGROUND:
In November of 2019, the Town Green and Arts District Concept Master Plan (Master
Plan) was approved by the Town Council. The Master Plan project can trace its
beginnings back to the 2017 Danville Parks, Recreation & Arts Strategic Plan Update.
That document provided strategic recommendations for incorporating “high impact arts
programming” into the Town existing facilities. Recommendations included: integrating
art into parks and facilities, activating parks with temporary art, developing
infrastructure that allows for performances, increasing art programming, create a
studio/maker space and incorporating art into youth programming.
DISCUSSION
Since the adoption of the Danville Parks, Recreation & Arts Strategic Plan, the Town has
begun incorporating several of the recommendations. With the development of the
Master Plan, Town Staff is continuing to explore ways to include the use of the Town
Green and Arts District more when planning for activities surrounding public art
exhibits and Art Gallery exhibits.
In past exhibits the Town Green and Arts District have been used as locations for art
pieces, interactive map murals and as a scavenger hunt location. In anticipation of the
summer public exhibit Shrumen Lumen, staff is exploring ideas that could enhance the
exhibit which could include, thematic art pieces and mini displays. Specific ideas which
are being explored are fairy lights to be displayed downtown, fairy and mushroom
themed mural, use of the Front Street property as a display location for a creative
directional signage and more.
These types of ideas can either be used for the upcoming or future exhibits. Staff would
like to take the opportunity with the Parks, Recreation & Arts Commission and the Arts
Advisory Board to discuss ideas which can help active the Town Green and Arts
District through public art exhibits.
RECOMMENDATION
Discuss ideas on integrating the Town Green and Arts District into public art exhibits and
provide staff with feedback and recommendations.
