Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission – Special Meeting
Summary of Actions
April 14, 2021 – REVISED
1. CALL TO ORDER
The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was
called to order by Chair Joyce at 5:01 p.m. The meeting was conducted by
Teleconference only.
1.1 Roll Call
Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg conducted the roll call for attendance:
Present: Brittany Beech, Commissioner
Kevin Donovan, Commissioner

1.2 Announcements
Kristine Meidberg, Administrative Assistant, provided information regarding the
format of the meeting and instructions for public comment.
2. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA
There were no changes to the order of the agenda.
3. “FOR THE GOOD OF THE TOWN” – To address the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission
about a subject which is not listed on the agenda, click on the "Raise Your Hand" option in Zoom. Your
name will be announced and you will have up to three (3) minutes to share your comments.

Nicole Seagar, is requesting a plaque, bench or art insulation at Oak Hill Park for
her deceased father, Dr Robert Kadas who was a well-known local pediatrician.
Nicole will present a proposal with suggestions to the Commission at a future
meeting.
John Sofranac on behalf of the Sports Alliance Group, Danville, requested staff to
review and move forward with the Diablo Vista Park project to improve lighting.
The Sports Alliance has committed to pay for all costs related to the Diablo Vista
Park lighting.
4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION/ACTION
4.1 Approval of the Summary of Actions from the February 10, 2021 Parks,
Recreation and Arts Commission Special Meeting
MOTION BY COMMISSIONER MESIC, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER
FALCON, TO APPROVE THE SUMMARY OF ACTIONS OF THE
FEBRUARY 10, 2021 PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING.
MOTION CARRIED 7-0-0-1; COMMISSIONER FUNG ABSENT
4.2 Review Options for Hap Magee Ranch Park Barn and Provide Staff with
Recommendation for Action
Director of Maintenance Services, Dave Casteel explained to the
Commission that the existing barn at Hap Magee Ranch Park has three
options: 1) demolish 2) rehabilitate or 3) leave it in its current condition. The
cost to demolish is estimated at $15,000 and rehabilitating is estimated at
$100,000 or leave as is which would be no cost. Demolishing the barn will
allow the Bounty Garden to build more garden beds and produce more
food. Dave Casteel responded to questions from the commission.
Chair Joyce opened Item 4.2 to public comment.
Michael McDonald, Danville, co-director of the Bounty Garden, expressed
concern of barn being a public nuisance and would like to expand at their
cost.

Bev Lane, Danville, previously was concerned about barn being
demolished although would like to be flexible. Bev has had discussions
with the Alamo Municipal Advisory Council and would like to see the barn
continue to be a constructive way to remembering the 3 barns.
Chair Joyce closed Item 4.2 to public comments.
MOTION BY COMMISSIONER DONOVAN, SECOND BY
COMMISSIONER MESIC TO PROCEED WITH DEMOLITION OF THE
HAP MAGEE RANCH PARK BARN.
RESTATED MOTION BY COMMISIONER DONOVAN, SECOND BY
COMMISSIONER MESIC TO APPROVE THE DEMOLITION OF THE
BARN AT HAP MAGEE RANCH PARK WITH THE REQUEST THAT THE
TOWN RECOVER AND REUSE AS MUCH OF THE WOOD AS POSSIBLE
AND REPURPOSE IT FOR APPROPRIATE USES WITHIN THE PARK.
MOTION CARRIED 7-1-0-1; COMMISSIONER STRAUCH OPPOSED;
COMMISSIONER FUNG ABSENT
5. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS
5.1 Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department Director’s Report
Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director Henry Perezalonso
provided updates regarding the Contra Costa Health Order and Vaccines
with regards to what the summer programs are able to do in the current
tier. Director Perezalonso also provided a current update on the status of
the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department and highlighted
some of the activities that have taken place over the past month.
5.2 Commissioners’ Reports and Comments
Commissioner Strauch reported elementary schools have opened and are
in session for 4 days a week. She also noticed the smaller dog park at Hap
Magee Ranch Park may need improvements in the future.
Commissioner Falcon complimented the pickle ball turn around.
Comments were provided regarding feedback about the March 10, 2021
Joint Study Session with the Town Council.

Commissioner Diamond reflected back to the goals of the March 10, 2021
Joint Study Session with the Town Council.
Chair Joyce provided feedback regarding the strategic plan and outlined
top priorities discussed at the March 10, 2021 Joint Study with the Town
Council.
6. ADJOURNMENT
The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was
adjourned at 6:55 p.m.
