9
Mosquito Program
Staff is guessing the decrease came from better care of properties with people at home more (reducing habitat)
WNV did appear in the county with moderate numbers found in traps (East County) and 4 cases of human contraction (also East County)
Zika Mosquito (aedes aegypti) continues to move north but not detected in Contra Costa County yet (closest is Yolo County)
10
Mosquito Program
In Danville, public should be aware of tree hole mosquitoes. These mosquitoes lay eggs in dry knot holes and other voids in trees, often oak trees. Rain water will rest in these holes
and activate the eggs. Tree hole mosquitoes transmit dog heartworm.
11
Yellowjackets
2019 had a mild winter. Female yellowjackets seek shelter during winter and re-emerge during spring. 2020 winter was cold enough for hard frosts that kill a number of over-wintering
yellowjackets. Thus the YoY reduction.
12
Vertebrate Program
Requests for Rat and Mouse service was up nominally
Would have expected similar number for skunks, but they decreased by almost 50%
Most of the skunk activity in Danville is associated with properties that border open space, have fruit trees with fallen fruit on the ground, bird feeders (skunks love birdseed) and
pet food and or water bowls left out overnight.
Maybe last year’s report led to more vigilant habitat reduction activity by landowners.
13
In Summary…
Moderate year for mosquito and vector activity
CCMVCD successfully adapted operations in response to COVID
We remain protected as the District fulfills its mission
