Dear Director Henry Perezalonso and Commission members, It has been brought to our attention that the Danville Recreation, Arts, and Community Services Commission is considering converting one of the existing Osage tennis courts into Pickleball courts, three to be exact! We would like to express our opinion concerning this… First a little history… My husband and I bought our home in Danville Station, on El Capitan Dr, in 1975. We were first owners and happy to have a pear orchard and view of Mt Diablo behind us. The town worked well with the homeowners when they considered removing the orchard and creating a 22 acre park. They held a meeting for opinions and suggestions. Since noise was a concern, many of us back up to the park, they agreed to build a berm, with hedge, and a height restriction (preserving our view), to buffer any noise. The town has maintained this berm/hedge height to comply with that promise. Years went by and tennis courts were considered. The town once again requested, and sincerely listened to, the voice of the neighbors. The concern of the neighborhood was lighting and nighttime play. The town promised that there would not be any lights on the court. The town has kept its promise. Now, on to 2021… We have received notice that the town is considering converting one of the tennis courts into pickleball courts. We’re very concerned and basically object to it, for the following reasons: • The sound of a pickleball game is much different than that of a tennis game. Pickleball is played with a hard plastic ball and a solid wooden racket. When the racket strikes the ball, the sound is much louder. • More racquetball players can play on the size of one tennis court, so that, too, would create more noise to the neighbors. • The noise created by a pickle ball game would be very distracting to a tennis game, and considering that it is a much faster game, the balls would be quite an interference to a tennis game. • League play rents and uses three of the courts, three times a week, always saving one court for drop in players. • Pickleball would increase the number of cars in the neighborhood and the parking lot. • An alternative could be using the Diablo Vista courts, since they are surrounded by open space. We long time residents were promised four tennis courts. We hope that you can uphold that promise. Sincerely, Harryette “Harvey” and John Hughes
