PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS COMMISSION
STAFF REPORT
4.2
TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission December 9, 2020
SUBJECT: Consider Approval of Hap Magee Ranch Park Gazebo Replacement Plan
BACKGROUND
The gazebo within the meadow at Hap Magee Ranch Park was installed in 2005. Over the
years, the gazebo has been utilized extensively for weddings and other events, serving as
a great park amenity. While it used to be overshadowed by the historic oak tree, the
gazebo has become a more prominent feature since the failure of the tree several years
ago.
DISCUSSION
After years of extensive use and exposure to the elements, the gazebo is in poor condition
and needs to be replaced. While the gazebo served the park well over the years, the wood
structure is not durable enough for a park setting and industrial grade metal would be a
more suitable material that would allow it to serve the community for many years to
come. Wanting to retain the character of the park and gazebo, staff has identified a metal
option that would have a similar architectural feel as the existing gazebo (Attachment A)
while being slightly larger. Staff would also recommend that the new gazebo be painted
to match the existing one as an additional way to help retain the character.
While preparing for the replacement of the gazebo, staff considered the merits of
relocating it to an alternate location, such as the grass area adjacent to the labyrinth.
However, the alternate locations considered presented various challenges (e.g., proximity
to utilities, existing trees, etc.). Additionally, feedback from renters has indicated a strong
preference to retain the gazebo in its current location within the meadow.
As mentioned above, the gazebo has become more of a focal point in the absence of the
historic oak tree. As such, its replacement provides an opportunity to further enhance its
value within the park. Staff is proposing a design that includes one main opening in the
middle rather than the current configuration of two openings – one on either side. The
primary use of the gazebo is for weddings and the proposed configuration would be
more appropriate for that use. To that end, a new decomposed granite pathway is
proposed to extend from the main pathway west of the gazebo to the new main opening;
this would provide a more traditional aisle and seating on either side. Finally, the
proposal includes planting several Sycamore trees on either side of the gazebo, framing
it while also adding to the scenic beauty of it with the hills in the background (see
proposed site plan – Attachment B).
FISCAL IMPACT
The gazebo replacement project is expected to cost approximately $80,000. Sufficient
funds have been allocated in CIP No. B-400.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the proposed Hap Magee Ranch Park Gazebo Replacement plan.
