SPECIAL MEETING
SUMMARY OF ACTIONS
November 12, 2020 - DRAFT
1. CALL TO ORDER
The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was
called to order by Chair Joyce at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was conducted by
Teleconference only.
1.1 Roll Call
Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg conducted the roll call for attendance:

1.2 Announcements
Kristine Meidberg, Administrative Assistant, provided information regarding the format
of the meeting and instructions for public comment.
2. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA
There were no changes to the order of the agenda.

Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg read into the record the public comments
that were received via email prior to 4:00 p.m.
Linda Holmes, San Ramon Valley Tennis Club (SRVTC) Board Member expressed her
concern over the conversion of tennis courts into pickleball courts, a topic that was
brought up by a public comment at the October 14, 2020 meeting. She is concerned
that there are already limited tennis courts in Danville and any conversion of courts
would severely impact the local tennis teams. She is asking the commission to protect
the local tennis clubs’ ability to continue to use the limited tennis courts.
A form letter with the same text, was also received from the following individuals:
- Lizabeth Connolly, Danville resident and Board Member of the SRVTC
- Tina Talbot, Danville resident and Board Member of the SRVTC
- Suzanne Reeve, Danville resident and Board Member of the SRVTC
- Cindy Turner, member of the SRVTC
- Patricia Eaton, Danville resident and member of the SRVTC
- S. Mann, Danville resident and Board Member of the SRVTC
The form letter expressed the concern over limiting access to the Osage Tennis courts
by converting any of the courts into Pickleball. They are asking the Commission to
keep the courts as they are now and protect the SRVTC.
Chair Joyce let the Commission know she has responded via email to each of the
emails thanking them for their input letting them know that no decision has been
made on this topic and that there would be a pickleball presentation at the November
12, 2020 meeting.
4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION/ACTION
4.1. Approval of the Summary of Actions from the October 14, 2020 Parks,
Recreation and Arts Commission Special Meeting.
Kevin Donovan requested a change be made to the incorrect meeting month that was
referenced in 5.2 Future of Parks, Recreation & Arts Discussion. The follow-up discussion
was based on the September 9th meeting not the October 14th meeting as stated.

APPROVE THE SUMMARY OF ACTIONS OF THE OCTOBER 14, 2020 PARKS,
RECREATION AND ARTS SPECIAL MEETING.
MOTION CARRIED 4-0-1-2; Commissioner Beech abstained; Commissioners Strauch
and Tappin were absent.
5. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS
5.1. Pickleball Presentation by Danville resident, Ben Crockett
Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director Henry Perezalonso introduced
Ben Crockett and explained that the Commission has not made any
recommendations or decisions on the topic of pickleball and they will not be asked
to so during this meeting.
Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg opened the item to public comment.
Ben Crockett gave an informational presentation on the sport of Pickleball. He went
over the benefits of adding pickleball courts to Danville. He went over the pros and
cons of two different options and explained the court conversion cost breakdown.
Mr. Crockett addressed and answered the Commissioners questions.
Several public comments and questions were submitted via chat and summarized
and read into record.
• Beth Topor, Resident and SRVTC member wrote about Homeowner’s
Associations not allowing public rental of courts. She would like to see
pickleball but not at the expense of tennis.
• Whallen Fong wrote in support of pickleball, it is a less stressful sport that
helps keep the older generation active. Believes there is room for both
pickleball and tennis.
• Stewart Proctor wrote in support of pickleball and extended open invitation
for Commissioners to see the conversion at the Crow Canyon Country club.
Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg closed the item to public comment.
5.2. Parks, Recreation & Arts Department Director’s Report

Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director, Henry Perezalonso provided an
update on the status of the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department
and highlighted some of the activities that have taken place over the past month
including the Spooktacular event and Scarecrow Stroll.
Our Community Center and Senior Center are now open for counter service
Monday-Friday 8:30am-1:00pm. Our Art Gallery is now open by appointment only,
Tuesday-Thurs 1:00pm-5:00pm and Friday 10:00am-1:00pm.
An update was given on the public art exhibit, Hearts Around Hartz auction. All
sixteen hearts were sold.
Mr. Perezalonso reported that the Spring Activity Guide will be published and sent
out.
Recruitment is open for current Parks, Recreation and Art Commission positions.
Applications are being accepted through December 1, 2020.
5.3. Commissioners’ Reports
Commissioner Donovan attended the Arts Advisory Board meeting. He reported that
great momentum has been created for public art in the community. Also, the Curatorial
Committee is recruiting.
Commissioner Fung updated the Commission on the Danville Youth Council (DYC).
The DYC volunteered at the Spooktacular event. He spoke about the Zooming with
Seniors program and letters to hospital workers.
Chair Joyce reported on the Senior Advisory Commission and what their vision is for an
age friendly Danville. Chair Joyce with be speaking with the Town Council and will read
the letter she wrote commending the Town for what they have done during the pandemic
and how important the parks have become.
6. ADJOURNMENT
The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was
adjourned at 6:57 p.m.
