My name is Beverly Kumar and I am a Commissioner for the Culture and Arts Commission of Contra Costa County. On behalf of the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County we would like to congratulate you all on the Public Art exhibit, Hearts around Hartz! Public art is so important- it doesn't just expose people to the arts, it brings the community together and shows that a town not only appreciates "nice things" but invests in having them for all to enjoy. This was also an important exhibit in regard to the well-being of our community. Getting people out to get their steps in, socially distanced and masked, motivates, inspires and brings peace to restless minds. Presenting opportunities for local artists to share the gift of their talents at a time when Covid-19 has hit the arts community particularly hard shows your dedication to lifting others up. I'd like to share with you a video from our Virtual Artist Cafe in which two SRVUSD high school students participated in a panel discussion. It speaks not only to the importance of arts education and why art needs to be interwoven in the fabric of our community, but the social- emotional benefits of art. To note, the moderator of the event (a high school student herself), is not an artist in any form but describes herself as a "Champion of the Arts." There is something incredibly special about acknowledging that perhaps you don't have a certain skill set or specific understanding of something, yet, you can appreciate it enough and value its importance enough to amplify its purpose to a larger audience therefore emphasizing its worth. Feel free to contact me anytime or attend one of our public meetings (virtual through July 2021). Meeting schedules and information can be found at AC5.org Thank you, Beverly Kumar 1 -- Beverly Kumar Commissioner, District 2 Arts & Culture Commission of Contra Costa County bk.ac5district2@gmail.com | 763-742-3126 BeverlyKumar.com 2
