PROCLAMATION
RECOGNIZING VETERANS DAY
WHEREAS, one year after the cessation of the hostilities in World War I, the 11th hour of the 11th day of
the 11th month, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of
Armistice Day, a day of reflection and solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in service to our country;
and
WHEREAS, on October 8, 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day
Proclamation in order to insure observance of this anniversary as all veterans, veterans organizations, and
the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose on the 11th of November each year, as a
day to honor American veterans of all wars; and
WHEREAS, local veterans are a vital part of our community, contributing to its patriotic, social, and
economic vitality. With 18.8 million veterans currently in the United States, including 939,000 U.S. WWII
veterans, all veterans are encouraged to share their stories and memories with their family, their fellow
veterans, and their communities; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Danville’s continuing commitment to veterans was honored when it partnered
with the San Ramon Valley Veterans Memorial Building Development Committee to rebuild the 1925
facility in the center of Danville and so dedicated it in 2012. The Veterans Memorial Building is the home
of eight veterans service organizations, including American Legion Post 246, VFW Post 75, the Viet Nam
Veterans of Diablo Valley, Marine Corps League Detachment 942, the Military Order of World Wars,
Military Officers Association of America, Bay Area Navy Nurse Corps Association, and Combat Veterans
Motorcycle Association Ch. 339, as well as the Blue Star Mom Detachment 101; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council does hereby observe Veterans Day on November 11, 2020
and encourages all citizens to recognize our local veterans for their continued service and leadership to other
veterans, active military, and our greater community.
