CALL TO ORDER The special meeting of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission was called to order by Chair Joyce at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was conducted by Teleconference only. 1.1 Roll Call Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg conducted the roll call for attendance: Present: Brittany Beech, Commissioner Jane Joyce, Chair Randall Diamond, Vice Chair Kevin Donovan, Commissioner Kyler Fung, Commissioner Youth Representative Alesia Strauch, Commissioner Alec Tappin, Commissioner 1.2 Announcements Kristine Meidberg, Administrative Assistant, provided information regarding the format of the meeting and instructions for public comment. 2. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF THE AGENDA There were no changes to the order of the agenda. 3. "FOR THE GOOD OF THE TOWN" Administrative Assistant Kristine Meidberg read into the record the public comment Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission Summary of Actions September 9, 2020 Draft 2 that was received via email prior to 4:00 p.m. Ben Crockett, Danville, requested that one public tennis court in Danville be converted to four pickleball courts. He is requesting to add this proposal to the October Agenda so that he can present his research and suggestions for its execution. 4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION/ACTION 4.1. Approval of the Summary of Actions from the July 8, 2020 Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission Special Meeting. MOTION BY COMMISSIONER DONOVAN, SECOND BY VICE CHAIR DIAMOND, TO APPROVE THE SUMMARY OF ACTIONS OF THE JULY 8, 2020 PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS SPECIAL MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 7-0 5. REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS 5.1. Engagement with Parks Discussion Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director Henry Perezalonso spoke to the Commission about an engagement survey administered by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and its results. The results of the survey showed the importance and the high value people place on parks and recreation services. Parks and recreation are essential for mental health, physical activity and much more. The item was opened to the Commissioners for discussion. Parks, Recreation & Arts Department Director’s Report Recreation, Arts and Community Services Director, Henry Perezalonso provided an update on the status of the Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission Summary of Actions September 9, 2020 Draft 3 and highlighted some of the activities that have taken place over the past two months. An update was given on the public art exhibit, Hearts Around Hartz. There is a scavenger “heart hunt”, an interactive map mural, and there will be an online auction of the hearts October 15 – 20th. Mr. Perezalonso reported that the fall activity guide will be posted online only and will include Senior programing. A Senior Silver Streak will not be produced this season. Recruitment has been authorized by the Town Council for current Parks, Recreation and Art Commission openings. Applications are being accepted through December 1, 2020. 5.3. Commissioners’ Reports Commissioner Beech attended the quarterly Iron Horse Corridor Management Committee meeting. She went over a few items that were discussed; homelessness on the trail, fire prevention tree trimming at San Ramon Valley Highschool and talk of a possible active transportation survey. Commissioner Donovan gave an update on the Arts Advisory Board meeting. He reported that Kim Bowles was elected Chair and Amy Schell was elected as Vice Chair. Commissioner Fung updated the Commission on the Danville Youth Council (DYC). The DYC will have an election day for leadership and committee members at their September 14th meeting. Commissioner Strauch requested an updated list of Commissioner Committee Assignments be distributed. She also spoke about, Kids’ Country, the non-profit, after school care organization. Kids’ Country is struggling due to COVID-19 and Commissioner Strauch expressed concern for working families if Kids’ Country does not survive the pandemic. Commissioner Tappin spoke of a park project he is working on in Morgan Hill. He looks forward to taking his experience from the project and applying it to the commission. He also expressed his hope that we will add the Pickleball discussion to our next agenda. Chair Joyce spoke of the convenience of “on demand” class offerings and how she is an advocate of them. 6.
