SUBJECT: Resolution No. 69-2020, designating the Xavier’s Shoe Store/DeSousa
Building located at 375 Hartz Avenue as a Danville Heritage Resource
BACKGROUND
On October 11, 2016, the Danville Planning Commission and Heritage Resource
Commission approved a Development Plan application for 375 Hartz Avenue authorizing
exterior façade improvements to the front elevation, construction of a 1,721 +/- square
foot second story addition and a 195 +/- square foot deck at the rear of the building,
construction of a 45 +/- square foot addition to the rear ground floor, and construction of
a 35 +/- square foot trash room to the existing historic building.
The Town Council approved a Historic Preservation Incentive Package for the project on
December 20, 2016.
On September 14, 2020, the Town’s Heritage Resource Commission adopted Resolution
No. 2020-01 recommending that the Town Council approve the heritage resource
designation.
The restoration of the building has been completed and the building is now ready for
designation as a Danville Heritage Resource. This building would be the 25th designated
Danville Heritage Resource.
DISCUSSION
Section 32-72.4 of the Danville Municipal Code establishes criteria for designation of a
Heritage Resource. The history of the Xavier’s Shoe Store/DeSousa Building includes the
following:
1.The structure is believed to have been built around 1911.
2.Tony Cabral ran a pool and card room in this building around 1915.
3.John Xavier moved into the building in the late 1920s or early 1930s, and ran Xavier’s
Shoe Store, which also did shoe repair.
4.Both the post office and telephone company occupied the building at one time.
Historic Designation 2 October 6, 2020
375 Hartz Avenue
5.The building is representative of a particular architectural style and/or reflects
special elements of a distinct historical period, type, style, or way of life important to
the Town.
The designation of this building would result in the installation of the Town’s oval historic
number bronze plaque, and the Town historic narrative plaque.
