Hi Marie,
Submitting the below public comment for the 7.29.2020 Special Council
Meeting under "For the Good of the Town".
Mayor, Town Council, and Town Staff,
The Hartz Avenue weekend closure has increased safety by eliminating
concerns of vehicle incidents with parklets Friday - Sunday. Additionally,
there is an increased ability to social distance while walking from
restaurants to our shops.
Since the closure, I have spent several weekends walking Hartz and
Prospect talking with business owners to listen and understand how the
change has impacted business. The most common response I received, and
the most vivid observation I witnessed, is that the Friday during the day
street closure has hurt business. Friday during the day is empty. People
start coming to Hartz in the evening. Volunteering at the Hot Summer
Sundays Car Show for the past nine years with Mayor Stepper and
Councilmember Storer, I understand the complications with closing streets
in the early afternoon/evening vs. first thing in the morning due to parked
cars and towing requirements, but do believe in order for the street closure
1
to support businesses, the street must be open during the day on Friday
and then close for the evening.
Furthermore, there is an opportunity for us to reposition the branding of
the Hartz closure. We could leverage the Town's social media presence
and have a marketing campaign focused on the safety measures in place at
stores and restaurants, the masked zones, and encourage people to safely
enjoy our restaurants and shops. We can also highlight the continued drive
up and go options to support businesses.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

All the best,
