Dear Mayor Stepper & Council Members,
First I’d like to thank you all for your strong leadership during this difficult time. Community feedback of the street
closures - particularly the more permanent parklets and side streets - has been overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully the
success of this effort can be adopted in future years for the Summer months. The closures improve the vibrancy and
appeal of our downtown core and provide our businesses needed financial support.
In my opinion, the biggest issue is the lack of consistent “policing” of laws or current health requirements. There are
restaurants ignoring COVID requirements - tables packed together, staff not wearing masks, indoor gatherings,
customers not wearing masks, etc. There are too many grey areas being allowed when the requirements seem to be
black & white - space tables per County guidelines, all staff much wear masks properly at all times, no indoor gatherings
and at a minimum post notices for customer face mask requirements. Admittedly, it’s challenging to enforce customers
wear face masks, but everything else is solely the responsibility of the restaurant owner. If ownership does not comply,
their ability to operate should be suspended or even revoked with repeat offenses. Why should everyone be punished
with the threat of higher community spread and potential outdoor dining closures for the actions of a few. Governor
Newsom has asked businesses and the general public to report these sort of infractions but hopefully this can be
handled at the local level.

So in summary, I’m in support of keeping all of Hartz Ave closed on weekends. The local enforcement needs to be
stepped up to ensure our community stays safe and open.
Thank you,
Darren Matte
