Hi Tina
As a retailer rather than a restaurant we do have a few thoughts on the street closures...
While we do understand the need for a safer more consistent environment for patrons of restaurants it
has been a bit of a hindrance to the ease in which our clients can reach us. Parking is limited downtown
and while we can provide them with every bit of information (map, directions etc) there is still a tendency
for our clients to have trouble finding us since they are unable to actually drive by the front of our store.
Most of our appointments take place Friday-Sunday so the closures happen on the three most important
days of the week for us. The closures, unfortunately, have not created more walking traffic flow for
anyone other than the restaurant industry which we completely understand as we want to be supportive
neighbors. However there really has been no benefit to anyone that is not a restaurant. We appreciate
that patrons dining in the street have a safer environment as we do know that drivers on Hartz can be a
bit aggressive as experienced by watching what goes on outside our shop windows on a daily basis. We
do feel as though if you are creating a more favorable environment for only one form of business you are
sometimes by default alienating the rest of the businesses downtown.
NOT
We would be in support of closures of this nature long term. There are a multitude of issues with this
theory. One, you are providing support to a very specific demographic of businesses and while doing so
you are creating a more difficult business environment for others. In allowing restaurants to create dining
areas on property that is not owned or operated by them they are taking advantage of real estate that
neither pays rent or taxes to boost the economy. We would all love to have an increase in our operable
square footage without having to pay rent on it but that is only feasible for some. Is the Town of Danville
willing to provide excess square footage for every single business operating downtown? And allow them
to utilize it without any cost to the business? An example being if each restaurant gains 500 sq ft of
frontage road to operate within do we then get to utilize 500 sq ft of the street for a gown sale or other
business operations? Of course, anyone benefitting from the street closures would wish to see it continue
long term but for those of us reaping no reward, there is a clear imbalance. We are operating in an
unprecedented environment at the moment and we certainly understand the attempt to ease the burden
of our health climate where possible but that needs to be within reason and not at the expense of others.
Over the years many downtown community members have requested consideration for a more favorable
downtown experience. i.e lights to line the trees down Hartz so customers are met with a more charming
and nostalgic environment (which would lead to a more lit downtown for the sake of safety in general).
This suggestion, as well as others, that would be a benefit to all have always been declined. Perhaps it is
time to seriously think through some options that would in fact benefit all who do business in the
downtown area?
