HomeMy WebLinkAbout061620 Gardiner, Allison In support of RESOLUTION 47-2020 of the Danville, CA City Council Agenda on June 16, 2020 Submitted by: A. Gardiner Statement of support of: 7.1 Consider adoption of Resolution No. 46-2020, adopting an Outdoor Flagpole Display Policy; and Resolution No. 47-2020, approving the display of the Rainbow Flag during the month of June (R. Ewing) Thank you Danville Town Council. Today, in Danville, California, you have the opportunity to support the flying of a very important flag. I humbly ask you to honor the request to fly the Philly PRIDE flag representing the LGBTQ+ community of color as a symbol of hope and belonging for ALL. I want to thank you for valuing the diversity that strengthens the Town of Danville. I want to thank you for proclaiming support of June as Pride month. I want to thank you all for listening to the many voices who have shared the importance of this flag. As a teacher in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, I want to especially thank you for supporting the voices of our youth in these matters. Our young community members are fighting for acceptance, understanding and respect for ALL. Our youth are seeking representation. Our community of all ages wants to know where we belong. I want to thank you for standing up, being brave, and listening to all of these voices. As a minority group, the LGBTQ+ community often feels the need to hide for their own safety. Most moments we feel the need to silence our own voices, shun our own truth, and conform as best as possible to blend into the majority. Today, by approving the display of the Rainbow Philly PRIDE Flag each June, you are saying we might be safe here. You are saying we have a voice. That we should stand tall and be proud. That we belong. By flying the Philly PRIDE flag, you are telling your community that Danville is a sanctuary for us, and that Black Lives Matter as this flag represents the racial diversity in the LGBTQ+ community, and that we are ALL welcome here. In a time when so many feel so isolated, so separated, so disparate, so misunderstoodyou are saying we ALL belong. Thank you for standing up for us! Thank you for taking this bold action and proving that Danville truly welcomes and supports all people. Sincerely, Allison Gardiner Equity Advocate, Parent, and Teacher in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District
