To: Marie Sunseri, Danville City Clerk
I ask that you please record my opposition to the Danville City Council agenda Item 7.1
My name is Eric Johnson. For the past 15 years, I have owned and operated a publication (ALIVE East Bay
Magazine), serving thousands of readers and numerous business operators in Danville and its surrounding
communities. Our office was located in downtown Danville for nearly eight years before relocating to nearby
Alamo.
I oppose Resolution 47-2020 and urge Danville council members to vote against it. Council members are to
represent all members of the community. Choosing to display any particular flag, other than flags representing
the entire community, invites the appearance of favoritism and bias. For example, if a BLM—Black Lives
Matter—flag is suggested next, I expect many in the community (I would) insist that a “Thin Blue Line” flag
also be displayed as well.
While groups and factions within the community will plead their cases passionately, council members must
rise above emotionally-charged arguments and make decisions based upon logic, representing all members of
the community, without regard to affiliation.
Rejecting resolution 47-2020 is the right thing to do.
