HomeMy WebLinkAbout021220-4.2 PARKS, RECREATION AND ARTS COMMISSION STAFF REPORT 4.2 TO: Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission February 12, 2020 SUBJECT: Recommend appointment of one Commission member to the Arts Advisory Board to fulfill the term ending June 30, 2021 BACKGROUND Shortly after the Town’s incorporation in 1982, the Town Council created the Park and Leisure Services Commission to advise the Council on parks, arts and cultural services in the Town. In 1990, the Council created a separate Arts Commission to advice the Council strictly on arts programming within the Town. With the adoption of the Danville Parks, Recreation and Arts Strategic Plan Update in 2017 (the “Strategic Plan), there has been an increased recognition of the need to coordinate public arts into the Town’s parks and public spaces. In addition, the Strategic Plan has highlighted the need to better coordinate cultural arts programming into use of the Town’s parks. The Town Council has decided to improve this integration of parks and arts within the community. At its September 3, 2019 meeting the Town Council adopted Ordinance No. 2019-08 replacing the existing Arts Commission by creating the Arts Advisory Board and renaming the Parks and Leisure Services Commission as the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission. At its October 9, 2019 meeting the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission recommended appointment of two commission members to the Arts Advisory Board. DISCUSSION The six members Arts Advisory Board consists of four members appointed by the Town Council (one of whom would be a youth board member) and two members of the Parks Commission recommended by the Commission. This proposed format parallels the structure of and working relationship between the Planning Commission and Design Review Board. Those two bodies work closely together in an integrated manner. Due to the recent resignation of a Commissioner the Parks Commission is being requested to recommend to the Town Council the appointment of one Commission member to the Arts Advisory Board: One member for two-year term ending June 30, 2021. RECOMMENDATION Recommend appointment of one Commission member to the Arts Advisory Board to fulfill the term ending June 30, 2021 Prepared by: Henry Perezalonso Recreation, Arts & Community Services Director
