DESIGNATING THE HISTORIC STRUCTURE LOCATED
AT 154 EAST PROSPECT AVENUE (COOLEY HOUSE)
AS A DANVILLE HERITAGE RESOURCE
(APN: 208-010-025 - DIANE GRAYBEHL)
WHEREAS, Diane Graybehl is the owner of the property identified as 154 East Prospect
Avenue (Cooley House); and
WHEREAS, on June 28, 2011 the Danville Planning Commission and Heritage Resource
Commission jointly approved Development Plan request DEV10-0076 which served to
allow: the existing historic structure on the property to be moved forward on the lot and
to be placed on a new foundation; a 2,018 +/- square foot ground floor, second story,
and basement addition to the existing structure; the construction of three new two-story
residential units to the rear; and the restoration of the historic structure; and
WHEREAS, the restoration of the Cooley House has been satisfactorily completed; and
WHEREAS, the Danville Heritage Resource Commission held a public hearing on
October 9, 2017, and approved a resolution recommending that the Town Council
designate the Cooley House as a Danville Heritage Resource; and
WHEREAS, the property owner, Diane Graybehl, has consented to the designation of
the Cooley House as a Danville Heritage Resource; and
WHEREAS, the Danville Town Council held a public hearing on November 8, 2017 to
consider the designation; and
WHEREAS, Section 32-72 of the Danville Municipal Code (Historic Preservation)
establishes criteria for designation of a heritage resource; and
WHEREAS, the history of the Cooley House includes the following:
• The structure was built between 1925 and 1932. The builders were Austin Root
and Steve Johnson.
• The craftsman bungalow design is consistent with designs that were popular in
the immediate post World War I period.
• Austin Root and Steve Johnson also built the adjacent and similar structures at
148 and 166 East Prospect Avenue. The subject structure was the second to be
built.
• Long time Danville residents Joe and Laura Bettencourt owned the property for
an unspecified period of time, but it is not known if they were the first owners.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council designates the Cooley House located at
154 East Prospect Avenue as a Danville Heritage Resource.
APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting held on November 8,
2017, by the following vote:
